Toradora had its slice of life tag removed a while ago, and the majority of people I talk to seem to agree that Toradora isn't a slice of life anime. However, I wanted to see what does the general public think and if this is a popular opinion.
Personally, I don't think it is. Toradora is much more about the romantic love polygon rather than the day to day life of the characters.
I'm curious what you guys think.

This show is definitely not a slice of life. As per my experience, it should have tags like Romance+Drama+Comedy. Slice of life genre has different theme than romantic drama. Say for example, Teasing Master Takagi-san is a rom-com+slice of life, Daily Lives of Highschool Boys & Grand Blue are comedy+slice of life. But in case of Toradora, more light was put on romance and drama aspects. So it's not an slice of life anime.

It has SoL elements in some episodes, but for the most part it isn't imo.

Nah, it's more a school-typed anime, plus slice of life anime usually chill, and relax, sometimes comedy, i think toradora is just a drama&romance anime

I absolutely have no idea of the definition of SoL anymore. The definition mal gives is very self contradicting. So it some sense it can be an SoL. but like Toradora plenty of Romance dramas have lost their SoL tags lately.

First, we should define what is a "Slice of Life" anime

I would call it Romance comedy slice of life.  I did not think it had too much drama tbh, but it does have enough to be labeled that too.

A great comparison would be oregairu. It, too, has slice of life elements, but the things is that unlike full-on slice of life shows, both of these have a grander narrative from the very start which can be easily seen in the structure of their episodes; they're way more episodic than than the mostly serialized slice of life anime. That's why they're both considered drama

TL;DR: Toradora is linear therefore it is more akin to drama anime

It does not have Supernatural elements to it, it takes place in Japan, on Earth, and in a school, it has elements that would happen in real life. Sure, I would think of it to be Slice of Life.

"A realistic representation of everyday experiences in a film, play, or book" these experiences are often regarded as mundane.

Toradora does fit that description. While the focus is the romance, these slice of life moments are still a big part of it.

I has all the SoL tropes, beach episode, Christmas episode, school festival episode, part time job, Valentine’s Day-girl-gives-chocolate-to-guy episode, I think the only one missing is the Yukata episode.. so arguably you can mark it as such and SoL enjoyers wouldn’t bat an eye, I know for sure I wouldn’t. But maybe that’s just personal preference

In that case, non supernatural nor Sci-Fi shows are basically SoL? I personally like to take SoL as "chill", something you don't need to follow 100% the plot. For example, Azumanga Daioh.

If a show focuses on certain moments that come off as everyday life experiences to the viewer, then by definition it is SoL.

However, we mostly refer as SoL to shows that are entirely focused on these moments. Rather than shows that have certain SoL elements in them.

It's not an SOL. It's a romantic comedy. Period. Poll results are disappointing. I think Toradora is the perfect example of the reasons why MAL decided to crack down so hard on the genre tag. Prior to the big change, almost everything was labeled SOL, no matter how story-focused it actually is; rendering the tag meaningless.

People seem to think that it applies to literally all contemporary settings with no science fiction or fantasy aspects. A flawed way of thinking that automatically disqualifies stuff like Aria which is quintessential SOL to the absolute core of its being, no two ways about it.

Think about the series which is plot and reason to be is literally nothing, like Non Non Biyori or Flying Witch, those series are the raw daily life of the characters. No goal, no expectation, just “let’s see what happens today”, where sometimes happens nothing at all.
Now think about toradora: Has it this vibes?

TvTropes describes slice of life as "Life, observed and examined. A cast of characters go about their daily lives, making observations and being themselves. "
it has been a while since i've watched toradora but i think it fits into this description at least in some moments

these animes are slice of life, but "iyashikei" too, so Toradora can be a slice of life bcs have realistic elements that make the anime entry on that category

MAL has a stupid rule that the romance and slice of life genres are “incompatible by definition” despite the combo probably being the most common in anime. That’s presumably why it isn’t tagged as slice of life.

Toradora is clearly a slice of life anime. It having drama, plot, and romance doesn’t detract from the clear slice of life elements. Go rewatch the beach house arc and tell me Toradora isn’t a slice of life anime, I dare you.

I have a mixed opinion about this. So I would yes and no just because it kind of is a slice of life anime but at the same time it is so heavily drama based that it’s pretty much 50/50. Even so it’s still a really good anime. :)

It definitely isn't, it is school life, drama, coming of age, etc. but mundane slice of life just isn't what this series is about.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

partly a SoL but doesn't need the tag, the "school" tag does it, I'm more surprised it doesn't have a comedy tag

SoL is a vibes based thing so it's subjective, but I don't think Toradora really counts, it's alternately either too sitcom-y or too dramatic in the back half to be a proper SoL. It's like, people don't call Lovely Complex a SoL, or Golden Time, so why would Toradora count as one?

SoL isn't really a genre so much as a mode, if that makes sense. To qualify as a Slice of Life, the show can't be either too dramatic or too comedic. I would classify Teasing Master Takagi-san as generally Slice of Life, because it's very fluffy, and while it is funny, it's not going for Wacky Hijinks laughs so much as a sensible chuckle. you know? It's hard to articulate, because it's something you feel.
