I was thinking recently that Gintama has two distinct tendencies: hilarious episodes and serious episodes.

Some episodes have no jokes a all and somehow try to be a battle shonen instead.

While others are truly hilarious.

It is important to know which episodes are which so you will not end up sloging though the entire Benizakura Ark or something like that.

Naruto for example has a guide on episodes if they are filler or canon.

I think Gintama needs a similar guide on whether episode is funny or it is serious.

That way it would be easier to tell what to watch and what to skip.

I remembered watching the entire series and it was hard to tell the difference, there also semi serious arcs like Yagyu arc and those it's serious it also has amazing toilet humour etc aha.

I need to rewatch gintama, never forget how much I laughed at kagura not being able to sleep all night and driving big brother gintoki nuts lol

Here is a guide if you're interested
https://sotaku.com/gintama-complete-skippable-episode-guide/

Though I don't really recommend skipping many episodes because, especially through the latter half, both the comedy and serious shit are at its peak.

Well, making a guide for skipping comedy episodes or any other would lack character development and enjoyment, imo. Even the fillers are mostly funny so I don't skip these things out.

What makes Gintama interesting and entertaining is the amalgamation of comedy and drama that sets it apart from other action shounens. The cast and their relationships are character-driven throughout the comedic episode, building character development for the serious arc/episode.

Kind of different from what I intended.

It says things like: '98-99 (Not necessary but lots and lots of Nintendo parodies are here)'

Bentendo OwEee is one of the most hilarious arks, this guide instead says you can just skip it.

In fact you should watch Gintama precisely for arks like Bentendo OwEee.

Yamazaki infiltrates Joishishi is also one of the funniest arks, this guide does not highlight it at all. I think it is episodes 107 to 109

We need the opposite guide.

Guide that skips character development and only leaves out comedy.

I'm saying there's no point in trying to make a skippable guide.

70-80% of Gintama is comedy, while 20-30% is serious. Newcomers will not leave that 20%, I mean why would they leave 20%. As for the re-watchers, they already know which arcs are funny or which aren't, which kind of defeats the purpose of the guide.

But well, having a guide wouldn't hurt anything, but who would go to the effort of making one? :0

Why skip episodes? Yeah it’s a shonen and a comedy and it’s the way they blend the two makes it funny. All the small interactions are what leads to the character development. And even the filler is funny. If you want to understand Gintama don’t skip anything.

This is basically what everyone is telling you, in the most watered down version. Don't skip episodes in an anime like Gintama. You don't know if you'll be getting something as good as that show again for your entire lifetime.

Excuse me but skipping episodes and Gintama don't go well in the same sentence. There's no point in watching Gintama if you would prefer to skip their hilarious/serious episodes because that's what make Gintama a wholesome anime, even its fillers are worth watching, we don't need that kind of guide lol

If you skip comedy episodes because you only want serious arcs then you are not watching Gintama for the right reasons and should drop it. Comedy is very much needed to the plot, and all the non-serious moments are important to the story as they help getting to know the characters and their relationships with each other. Whether you enjoy them or not, they are not fillers and are all canon. Therefore, should not be skipped. You will be able to fully enjoy the fights and understand everyone’s growth way better if you actually watch them.
And that also goes the other way around. The serious arcs explaining the reason why Gintoki created the Yorozuya in the first place and showing us how much he's changed as a person over time are very important too. They make his character way more likable and admirable.

Why would you want to skip episodes

I personally think that Gintama is at it's finest when it's following a (somewhat) serious story arc. At those time it is simplt perfection.

it doesn't exist after all this time bc you're not intended to skip anything.

Most people like Gintama for its comedy so that doesn’t make sense and the funny moments a lot of times end up advancing the plot.

I said the opposite: I said skip serious ark and only keep comedy.
