Iwasawa's memories/backstory seemed more gripping than Yuri's.

Decent ep... still waiting for something spontaneous to happen...

Here's what I think:

This show isn't about death or reincarnation or going to Heaven. The "afterlife" that everyone is in right now is actually an advanced virtual reality created in order to help people with their mental or emotional problems. Tenshi is some kind of program in charge of bringing the people who managed to solve or accept their problems back to the real world. The characters that disappear are cured of whatever was wrong with them. The new characters that show up are new patients introduced into the VR world. The NPCs are there in order to simulate a normal school environment and to facilitate the road to recovery. The characters who fight against Tenshi are the ones who haven't yet realized their problems. They too will disappear one by one once they come to terms with their personal problems.

This is only my theory and I may be off by miles with my reasoning, but I hope I am because otherwise I will be very disappointed for having figured out the mystery after only 3 episodes. So far, I am not impressed with this show, unlike every other KEY anime I've seen.

Even after it was showed 3 times which it was begging to be noticed due to the contrast and design, I still didn't notice it! Thanks. Oh, here's the enhanced version since it could be barely noticeable in your picture.

Just a little thought.
Quite fast for a character intro + end.(Well, the series is 13 episodes in total after-all)
Anyways, I'm wondering if gradually everyone starts to disappear over the course of the series? (I really don't want this happening >.<)
Also, maybe Angel isn't really that bad?
(I'll be interesting to see her "story")

Looking forward to the next ep.
Keep it comin' Key.

She could just erase them, you know. Instead she seems to be playing by rules: Only attacking/interfering when someone is actively breaking the rules.

BTW why was Iwasawa's guitar in that "after-life" place? At least I think it was her guitar from when she was still alive and I doubt she would have gotten that angry at the teacher if it wasn't that one. Was there any explanation to this or is it just a plothole?

The students can make anything they want and know about, "out of dirt itself". That guitar was like a part of her soul. She recreated it from her memories when she arrived at school. If she didn't just pull it into the afterlife with her: maybe in this world you really can "take it with you". :)

I think it was so far the best episode.
After seeing Iwasawa story plus the one from last episode I got some conclusions about this whole disappearing stuff and after life but I will wait a little longer, maybe few episodes to confirm it ;]

The episode pretty much sucked.

Ok, this episode was really intense and the drama was more wellplaced then in the previous one. Yuri should have been the last one to reveal her momories and it should have been more dramatic...
The performance was great and all the insert songs were awsome. I will miss Iwasawa...if she really disappeared though no doubts about it.
I think I'll get a liking to this.

Well, the show upped the unnecessary, senseless melodrama, so all the Key Fans are loving it. I was bothered by small details like the fact that she was using headphones like she had never heard of them before, and that she seemingly just picked up a guitar in the rain and was boss at it from the get go. The music was all generic, and the singing was good for anime, bad for real life. Also, the humor was quite a fail, and Yui made me miss Fuuko.

And apparently it's not that hard to gain powers. The boys got invisibility pretty quickly.

On the positive side, the last bit of the episode was a nice development, even if it seems to contradict all the allusions that they're in a game (especially Tenshi's room, and server with all the players, and program to upgrade herself).

What do you mean by the concert wasn't needed? The whole point of the episode was Iwasawa encouraging others through her songs and hoping music will eventually save someone the same way it saved her. The music played a big part in this episode so if you are saying the concert scene wasn't needed then I think you have missed the whole point/message of the episode.

Like someone said earlier, why did it have to be a large focus in this episode? I could give two fucks about the music, some plot and drama is finally starting to flare up, I don't care about it forcing in cliches at this point.

I'm a bit disappointed with this episode, the last one was better.

I don't get it how everybody likes the drama-part in this series. IMHO it wasn't really touching or something, it was just the usual stuff you see in drama series.
I also think that GirlDeMo is actually a quite useless element of AB. In the first episode it reminded me of the concert episode of Haruhi. I get the impression that the band was just put in here to show off with animation quality and lure the K-ON!-fans.
Instead, I think the comedy is really a winning point of AB. I lol'd when Christ started babbling the numbers of pi xD
The thing with the disappearance was good, I think, as it lets you speculate about the "rules" of the world in AB.

Although I put in quite a criticism, I still like the series. Looking forward to the next ep^^

I completely agree, the drama is probably the weakest point of ab (and i'm a sensitive person), for some reason I don't feel involved at all.
All I like is the concept and mysteries about the afterlife world, and angel is getting more and more interesting

I like reading everybody's different theories about what the hell is going on ...and I'm glad that the story is starting to capitalize on the head-tripping/matrix-y elements. Until this episode, I thought they were going to completely blow their potential. Now I have a little bit of hope.

This episode was phenomenal. Like the two episodes before it, Angel Beats has done an exceptional job at expanding the story, characters, and plot masterfully. Not only does everything go forward with extremely fluidity, but it also does it so well that there are questions at the end of the episode that you KNOW will be answered sooner or later, mostly because of the confidence you have for the anime from the previous episodes. I don't know about you guys, but I think 13 episodes are too little to contain this epic story of a mostly enjoyable cast. I have really high hopes for this one.
Relating to this episode...IWASAWA NOOOOO!!! Why did she have to go man.. And to add to it, the creators intentionally replaced her at the ED with some four eyed freak calling himself Christ. God DAMN.
On a side note, I can't believe at how skillfully the creators made somebody who had no background or personality into an emotionally attaching character in just one episode, AS WELL as pushing the story further. I really don't want to kiss ass so much, but I have to say this is going to be a favorite.

I didn't dislike Iwasawa but I don't feel like anything was lost now that she's gone. I find it difficult to since they hit us with her "death" almost immediately after her drama backstory within the same episode.

Didn't really find her background before she died and ended up in the SSS all that interesting or sad either. I noticed the details leading up to her death was very KEY-like, though.

First half made for a pretty boring episode but Iwasawa's disappearance was at least worth something for the shock factor.

I partly agree with you. Right when you know you the character. They suddenly disappear.I felt that I didn't really find it THAT sad. Well what can you do? 13 episodes and 10 more to go?

A Laputa and a Howl reference in less than 20 seconds was just epic win.

Apart from that, this was a certain improvement from the first two episodes. The atmosphere of the show is finally set and we start to see small developments here and there. Most of all, the disappearance of Imasawa sets things straight and explains alot about the universe and themes of Angel Beats!.

frz665 said:
ok basically the story has only 13 episodes and its not about reincarnation. the actual story is that the afterlife world is for all those ppl who are unstaisfied with their life and its a place where they stay until they let go of any attachments or unfufilment they have on earth they can go to heaven read wiki for more info

And that's what we can guess from this episode exactly, as frz665 pointed out already. And that's a pretty nice concept, very Key-like too.

Is it just me? but im getting bored of this series and if it wasnt for such an amazing visual style i wouldnt be watching this, i wanna see it progress and i have loads of questions un-answered which i hope will answered during the series, i dont get what they do? so they go and look onto a girls laptop for information! why? and also the Angel appeared why didnt the angel kill anyone or they kill the angel? and then the rest of the episode was taken up by the concert which, yes it was nice but it is ditracting from the hole plot and story.

Only good thing i can find is we found out that singers.guitarist backstory on why shes there :s

Like many have said, I don't know what to feel about this episode. To be honest, I liked where this series started, but if every episode from now on is going to focus on a character and then take them away, count me out of this. It's hard to make me feel sad for a character that was practically developed in 10 minutes.

Now when Yuri told her story, it was situational and the mood was set for it and I genuinely felt for her. Sure I was a little sad during this one, but it wasn't the same.

Honestly, I would have preferred this to be more of a comedy, which it seemed like it would be from the first episode. They pulled the old bait and switch on me!

Seems like it will still be a good show overall though.

This. It seems fairly clear that the persons (non-NPC) in this world all died bitter and angry at the world/God over how their life resulted, and Iwasawa disappeared from this world after she found her own peace. It isn't a really close comparison with the concept of Purgatory, but that is the nearest example I can think of so far.

1) It's only been three episodes >>
2) They looked on Angel's laptop to see if she had anything interesting there
3) She decided that force wasn't necessary, maybe because the NPC teachers were handling it? And since she wasn't attacking, the others didn't see the need to attack her and cause a panic in the NPC student body.
4) Concert fit in this ep because it was about the redhaired girl, and that was her band.

Maybe I'm saying this because I'm coming off of another series with a really disjointed plot, but I found this ep easier to follow than say, the first one, which dropped you into the middle of everything.

Wow, Iwasawa is gone......but something tells me she won't stay gone. It was sad :(

And Angel didnt seem like she was really all that intent on stopping the GirlDeMo concert....and what she said bothered me....

"It's like I'm the bad guy..." or something along those lines. And if Angel has to use the same means they do to create weapons, maybe she was once human too?

And she was listening to the concert too, and she came back after the ballad started playing, almost as if the song was "speaking" to her or something, and what Iwasawa said about saving someone thru music like she was saved....maybe she'll save Angel?

Just my thoughts. It was a moving episode, and as always the ED is wonderful, as well as the OP =)
