Nope, you have got the wrong idea. It's called a harem only when the mc have romantic interests in the other girls too. Just take SAO for example, it has more than a dozen girls, who all really like and maybe even love Kirito. However, it's never considered a harem because Kirito himself only lives asuna and and thinks of every other girl only as very good friends or as sisters of him.

Though, I would still agree with the fact that MAL genres can't always be blindly trusted as they miss some genres sometimes. But, they constantly update the genres, so they are mostly correct.

You're being pedantic. Imagine thinking that Love Hina and Tenchi Muyo aren't harems because Keitarou and Tenchi don't reciprocate the affections of their female cast mates. They are both harems, SAO is ALSO a harem, and from a cursory glance at the wiki, NGNL is too.

Technically no but absolutely it functions like one. Protags gain more and more girls every few episodes in an ecchi enviorerment - So it may not have the tag but ya it might as well be😂

almost 50% anime are harems, im srs look at seasonal charts, decent portion of amime are either isekai or harem or both

So many people here are taking genre incredibly strictly. It's kind of a blend, and I would absolutely agree that it fringes into harem, even if it's not completely centered on it. If harem elements stick out enough for you to notice, then think of it as harem. Almost any kind of art is going to defy genre classification to some extent.
