The editorial department of Weekly Shounen Jump announced on Monday that the serialization of Act-age has been cancelled. The chapter appearing in the combined 36th and 37th issue on Tuesday will mark the manga's conclusion.

The announcement comes two days after the manga's author, Tatsuya Matsuki, was arrested on suspicion of sexual misconduct with two junior high school girls. According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, Matsuki confessed that the accusations are not incorrect and admitted the charges.

The editorial department clarified in a statement that after confirming the matter and discussing it with the manga's illustrator Shiro Usazaki, it is not possible to continue with the serialization.

Shueisha's Manga Plus platform announced Saturday that it will not post the final chapter on its website and released an English statement:

Tatsuya Matsuki, the writer of Act-age was arrested on August 8, 2020.

The editorial department takes this situation very seriously, and after confirming the matter and discussing it with Usazaki-sensei, the illustrator for the manga, we have come to the conclusion that it is impossible to continue with its serialization. The chapter that is in the combined 36th and 37th issue of Weekly Shounen Jump will be the final chapter.

It is extremely unfortunate to have to end a series that has received so much support from so many readers in this way. However, this decision was made because of the nature of the incident, and because Weekly Shounen Jump recognizes the weight of its social responsibility.

We offer our deepest regrets and apologies to our readers. This is a difficult time for Usazaki-sensei, but the editorial department offers Usazaki-sensei our support and encouragement for future works.

Information about the graphic novel volumes, related publications, and events will be announced as they are decided.

Matsuki and Usazaki published the Asagaya Geijutsu Koukou Eizou-ka e Youkoso (Welcome to Asagaya Art High School Film Department) one-shot in Weekly Shounen Jump in January 2017, which became the prototype for Act-age. The latter began regular serialization in the magazine the following January. Shueisha published the 12th volume on July 3.

VIZ Media released the first three chapters in English simultaneously with the Japanese release in its digital Weekly Shounen Jump magazine as a part of its Jump Start initiative. The company began simulpubing the manga digitally through its Shounen Jump platform in December 2018. The first volume shipped on July 7. Manga Plus began simulpublishing the series in English last January.

Act-age ranked third in the 14th edition of Recommended Comics Selected by Japanese Bookstore Employees last year and placed fifth in the 4th Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Taisho in 2018—a joint award by Kadokawa's Da Vinci literature magazine and streaming platform Niconico. The manga was also nominated for the 43rd Kodansha Manga Awards last May.

Unfortunate but a good decision. Hopefully, the illustrator-san can find a better manga to work on and a better mangaka to work with this time.

Look up the definition of that word. Only Watsuki falls under that category.

That was expected I think.
There was speculation that the illustrator might continue the series and there are examples of it happening (asterix, iryuu/medical dragon) but that won't be the case here it seems.

Man this is really sad. It's definitely the right decision since the author did something terrible, but it doesn't change the fact that one of my favorite manga is being cancelled. Hopefully the artist of the manga can find a new project after what happened.

The mangaka fucked up big-time.
An acting based manga in shounen jump was a big feat by itself. And it had also had good ratings and sales. It must be terrible for it's fans that it ended up abruptly.
Hope the illustrator career isn't affected.

The author, how dumb can one be, he was on the verge of becoming a millionaire with act age getting a possible anime adaption live action stage play etc. And he fcks it up like that, I can’t believe how dumb some human beings can be.

SERIOUSLY WHAT DID HE HAVE ON HIS MIND THAT HE WAS INVINCIBLE, FRIGGIN IDIOT!

Shounen Jump and pedos, find a more iconic duo. I guess Oda decided to not protect this one.

I feel bad for the artist, she has been working for this dude since she was like 18 apparently. You gotta wonder if something happened behind the scenes with her too. Now her resume is forever fucked because of this moron.

TLDR: He ride on bike grabbing middle schooler breast on the street then run away, twice.

Cancelling this is probably the best decision. I really don't see this series ever continuing without the author and not only that his indecent action towards minors.

Anyone praying for a revive should just stop immediately. My only hope is that the artist finds a new series to work on. She deserves the support we need.

I think that more than a decision on the part of Jump, it is a decision on the part of the artist, sincerely Jump would have continued serializing it if it generated income, but the artist surely opposed that, since it should not feel good for her to continue the work of a guy who abused women. Be that as it may, it is a shame, since because of this guy there are victims and collateral damage.

Definitely shocking, yet not surprising. I'm just really fucking glad that Usazaki can recover from this BS. Nobody deserves this

Why? Why did the writer have to throw all of this away? And for what? A few seconds of touching some young girls? Three years of hard work thrown out the FUCKING window for something stupid and petty like that? The manga was in shonen jump! It was blowing up! It was trending! It was even gonna get a stage play eventually! AND HE FUCKIN THREW ALL OF THAT AWAY! This guy had it made but he just fucked his entire career and the fans of this series. Especially the victims. When reading his comments at the end of volume one he said something along the lines of “it’s thanks to Usuzaki Sensei for bringing my sloppy story boards to life.” Nor exactly word for word but you get what I mean. I though “Gee wiz! What a humble and earnest guy!” I thought someone who could write a story this good couldn’t possibly be a bad person but I guess I’m just a bad judge of character. Like, he was completely unable to look outside of himself when he decided to feel up those girls. I’m starting to regret getting into this manga a few weeks ago. I absolutely love it but now that I know I will never get any proper closure to the series just saddens me. I hope the artist can bounce back from this soon and find more work. I love her art work and it’s a shame for such potential to be affected like this. Seriously Tatsuya Matsuki, you really FUCKED up.

If you made it to the end of my post then thank you for reading. Just wanted to put my thoughts out there before I say goodbye to this series for good. I still plan on catching up to the rest of the chapters at some point but I’m not in the head space to appreciate it right now.

First of all, Watsuki did this in a completely different magazine which is Jump SQ and it has its own editorial.

Second, no one can know that other people are pedo. There's tons of cases of mangaka doing shit in Japan and you just don't know because they aren't on big magazines.

Honestly, I'm just frustrated and disappointed as fan and sad for Usazaki, as she has lost her biggest work due to this idiot's actions. Screw you Tatsuya Matsuki, I pray that the victims are okay and you have the sentence you deserve for your crimes.

Act-age's reputation got destroyed and there's nothing to do about it.
