A Hollywood live-action film adaptation of ONE and Yusuke Murata's One Punch-Man manga series is being developed by Sony, according to a report by entertainment news outlet Variety on Tuesday.

Screenwriter Scott Rosenberg and film producer Jeff Pinkner—known for writing Venom and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle—are penning the live-action film at Sony Pictures. Avi Arad (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and Ari Arad (Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance) of Arad Productions are producing the film.

Synopsis
After rigorously training for three years, the ordinary Saitama has gained immense strength which allows him to take out anyone and anything with just one punch. He decides to put his new skill to good use by becoming a hero. However, he quickly becomes bored with easily defeating monsters, and wants someone to give him a challenge to bring back the spark of being a hero.

Upon bearing witness to Saitama's amazing power, Genos, a cyborg, is determined to become Saitama's apprentice. During this time, Saitama realizes he is neither getting the recognition that he deserves nor known by the people due to him not being a part of the Hero Association. Wanting to boost his reputation, Saitama decides to have Genos register with him, in exchange for taking him in as a pupil. Together, the two begin working their way up toward becoming true heroes, hoping to find strong enemies and earn respect in the process. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

ONE originally launched One Punch-Man as a webcomic in July 2009. Yusuke Murata (Eyeshield 21) began redrawing the action superhero manga on the Tonari no Young Jump website in June 2012. Shueisha published the 21st volume on December 4 last year. One Punch-Man has a cumulative 20 million copies of its compiled volumes in circulation.

Madhouse adapted the manga into a 12-episode television anime in Fall 2015. Daisuki, Hulu, and VIZ Media's Neon Alley platform streamed the anime with subtitles as it aired in Japan. Adult Swim's Toonami programming block debuted the show with an English dub in July 2016. VIZ Media released the anime series on home video in North America in April 2017.

A second season produced by animation studio J.C.Staff premiered in 12 episodes in Spring 2019. Crunchyroll and Hulu simulcast the anime in Europe and North America, respectively. Toonami aired the second season with an English dub in October 2019.

VIZ Media began serializing One Punch-Man in English in its Shounen Jump Alpha digital anthology in January 2013 and currently simulpublishes the manga on its new Shounen Jump platform with the Japanese release. The 19th volume shipped on March 3. The manga has also been published in multiple foreign languages.

Has the potential to be as great as the first season but it'll really come down to how much care (+money) goes into this, I suppose.

Should at least be watch-able though so I'll give this a go with minimal expectations when and if it comes to theaters at my place.

When stuf like this happens, the usual reaction of an anime fan would be like this:

But I'm still curious about this anyways. Even though I'm not a huge into OPM myself and the idea of a Hollywood anime adaptation mostly scares me.

They better cast Johnny Sins as Saitama, or I'm not even going to acknowledge this adaptation.

This is pretty good, considering OPM is one of the series that could work well in live action with today's all high budget and huge CGI levels.

Looking forward to more of this def.

I almost made this post 5 minutes after I read the news. Why even announce something like this when it's in ore-production? You're not even going to be allowed to work on it, like, what? What is the point? That being said, Venom was trash and should have not been PG-13 audience. It literally ruined that movie. OPM however could skate by, let's see what this guy got.

Hollywood doesn't have a very good track record when it comes to these live-action adaptations, let's hope this can be one gem. I have low expectations but I want to remain at least cautiously optimistic.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

We'll have to see the actual staff behind this. OPM is reliant on it's humor, a humor that doesn't actually translate well outside of the anime medium, and definitely doesn't work when westernized (like the reliance on facial expressions and reactions over gags). If they get someone to alter the humor enough to still remain OPM-esque while getting rid of that pesky adaptation barrier I could see this being a fun enough afternoon waster. Who knows, maybe instead of the shit show that was Ghost in the Shell (2017) we'll get something as watchable as Alita, which was still inferior to the source material but still a pretty fun movie.

That's if it even gets made, wasn't there supposed to be an HBO adaptation of Monster by Guillermo del Toro? The fuck happened to that?

Its going to need to be so CGI heavy.
Wonder if James cameron would have been a better choice.
The casting is going to be so white washed and racist at the same time.

Why do Muricans feel the need to do these distasteful things to every popular anime?
Do they really naively think fans want this or is it just about money milking? Don't they see every time they "tried" it was an utter failure?

Sounds like complete garbage in the making. Putting aside that production team already sounds awful with crap they made, the idea of making live action movie of something that mostly relies on visuals that can be achieved only as anime sounds like Dragon Ball all over again. We already saw what happened when second season got noticeable visual downgrade... Imagine it being 100 times worse. Oh well, always nice to see Scumwood bleed out money. Maybe someone at some point will realize it's better to make Pacific Rim 2. For real this time...

I think a Deadpool movie style would fit quit well with OPM's unserious nature, I just hope it won't completely blow ass out of dick this time.

. I don’t really see how it’s distasteful to make a live action movie based on a manga. That’s like saying it’s distasteful for Japan to make anime on Batman or X-Men. Just take a chill pill and be happy that there’s even a one punch man movie happening.

I wouldn’t be surprised lol. Anime/Manga fans will always complain about live action movies based on manga even if it’s good. They just want the films to be exactly the same as the source material.

So you clearly haven’t watched movies like Endgame & Godzilla 2, both movies have amazing visuals so I think Hollywood would do just fine with OPM. Dragon Ball was a total failure because it was impossible for them to actually make the movie good and be like the actual anime. Nowadays, it’s definitely possible. Btw let’s not forget that the anime industry is even worse than Hollywood. Like at least Hollywood knows how to pay their actors while voice actors in the anime industry get paid like shit.

S2 is fucking horrible, there is nothing to defend about it.

--------------------------------------------------

So, the good part about sony is that the CG is going to be good. The bad part is that they are gonna americanize the shit out of the manga, and god knows who is going to be saitama.

Imagine fucking Johnny Sins as Saitama, lmao he looks perfect for the role.
