A third anime season for Mamare Touno's Log Horizon light novel series was announced by NHK on Wednesday, scheduled to air in October 2020. The third season—subtitled Entaku Houkai (Collapse of the Round Table)—will reunite the production staff and cast members from the past two seasons at Studio Deen.

Synopsis
In the blink of an eye, thirty thousand bewildered Japanese gamers are whisked from their everyday lives into the world of the popular MMORPG, Elder Tale, after the game's latest update—unable to log out. Among them is the socially awkward college student Shiroe, whose confusion and shock lasts only a moment as, a veteran of the game, he immediately sets out to explore the limits of his new reality.

Shiroe must learn to live in this new world, leading others and negotiating with the NPC "natives" in order to bring stability to the virtual city of Akihabara. He is joined by his unfortunate friend Naotsugu, having logged in for the first time in years only to find himself trapped, and Akatsuki, a petite but fierce assassin who labels Shiroe as her master. A tale of fantasy, adventure, and politics, Log Horizon explores the elements of gaming through the eyes of a master strategist who attempts to make the best of a puzzling situation. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Touno began writing the adventure fantasy novel series on the Shousetsuka ni Narou website in April 2010. Kadokawa released the first volume with illustrations by Kazuhiro Hara (Gundam Build Divers) in March 2011. The 11th volume shipped in March 2018. Touna published the 12th, 13th, and 14th volumes on the aforementioned website in 2016 and 2017 and updated the latest volume with chapter 134 in March 2018.

The first season by animation studio Satelight aired over two quarters beginning in Fall 2013. Studio Deen produced the second season the following Fall, which also aired for two cours. Crunchyroll simulcast both seasons with subtitles as they aired in Japan.

Sentai Filmworks licensed the anime series in North America and released the first season on two Blu-ray and DVD volumes in November 2014 and January 2015. The second season was also shipped in two Blu-ray and DVD volumes in May and June 2016.

Yen Press licensed the light novel in English in 2014 and published the first volume in April 2015. The 11th volume is scheduled to go on sale on January 29. The series has also been published in multiple foreign languages, including Chinese, Korean, Thai, Portuguese, French, and Polish.

Woah! Didn't see that coming. Log Horizon is one of the few game-based isekai shows that I actually think is worth watching. A pleasant surprise indeed.

"They escaped the weight of darkness,
to forge a path into the marrow of the spirit.
They chose to drown in a deeper vacancy,
an emptiness that quells the null,
a pool for the forgotten..."

I might actually finish the second season now! Any ideas how much more of the novel series will be adapted in this one?

This was unexpected. Hopefully it's better than the 2nd season. It's good that one of the few decent isekai gets another season.

I thought this will never happen after the author was found guilty of tax evasion.

IIRC the 2 previous seasons covered the first 10 volumes in ~50 episodes. Currently there is a total of 11 light novel volumes (+4 spinoff volumes). If we are generous we can assume 1 or 2 more volumes will release before October. I don't see how this will work out unless they adapt spinoff novels.

Edit: Apparently, there is a Web Novel that is up to volume 16.

This is one of the happiest nights of my MAL life! I've had it in my faves ever since I first became a member. I've stuck with it through thick and thin. Now, I'm eagerly awaiting the payoff :D

Definitely wasn't expecting this at all! I've been meaning to give this series a shot for a while now so hopefully now this'll urge me to finally do so.

Fall 2020 with the likes Shingeki no Kyojin: the Final Season, Fumetsu no Anata e, Yakusoku no Neverland 2nd Season and now this is looking fantastic!

Congratulations to the fans of the franchise by the way!

I'm hoping they won't stretch the story like they did during season 2.

holding breath... Deen is doing another season.
Says that it's the original production staff from s1 and s2 tho so should be ok with Deen animation style yet again I guess.

The Wev novel(which is almost the same as the ln) has written about halfway trough vol 14.

based on the title they are adapting at least vol 11 and 12, so im guessing 1 cour , maybe up to vol 13 but still one cour unless they stretch it out, when s2 came out vol 9 and 10 were not out yet but the web version was completed.

either way, IM JUST DAMM EXCITED WE ACTUALLY GOT A S3. Im crying tears of joy T.T i tought we will never see more after the author got arrested for tax evasion.

Why can't Satelight get this anime back? Why do we have to suffer? Why? Kill me please.

EDIT: I really enjoyed season 2, but just actually read Studio DEEN will be doing this 3rd season again, please don't butcher another franchise...

People pointing out that more web novel is available than light novel, which is true, but Enterbrain must be involved in the process - hopefully this is being done, from their perspective, in order to kickstart releasing new volumes again. They have little incentive to release an anime adaptation of the web novels...

And how will they deal with having reduced volume 9 to a single episode? Volume 11 and presumably later volumes too rely quite heavily on stuff they skipped or ignored from that volume, but they covered it enough that they can't really go back over it now.

Unless the new season is entirely anime original content *shudders*.

It seems odd to me that people constantly trash S2, and yet the difference in rating is only 0.4 from season 01.

IMO I think it's just popular to hate on studio DEEN for most people.

Anyway I look forward to this next season. I might rewatch maybe not depends if I have time.

I didn't expect more of the Log Horizon anime after season 2 so this is definitely an unexpected surprise. Gotta rewatch the first 2 seasons since it's been like 5 years since I watched them.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

As far as i remember, 2nd season started strong and ended strong but the middle part was like they went on a sidequest or something.

Well, this is certainly quite the surprise, as it's already been five years since season 2 aired. Still, Log Horizon was a great show so more of it is always welcome.

Just please put more effort into this than Nanatsu S3 Deen, that's all I ask.

i will say i thought the 2nd season was a bit weaker than the first, which is why i gave the second season a 7 while i gave season 1 an 8. i just felt like the second season was lacking in storytelling, world-building and the like. i would love a season 3 with lots of political intrigues, world-building, big plots and in depth stories. and since i love shiroe i would like a really big problem to solve that only he is able to take care of

Tbh 0,4 is pretty huge. And on top of it it's a sequel - which naturally gets better scores, as it's watched only by people who already like this anime (completed S1).
Personally I didn't even look at studio. S2 just felt much worse, but mostly because of the content, not technical stuff. In the end it might not be studio's fault but source material that went that way.

Either way, I'm still happy for adaptation. I'm sure less hyped for it than I was for S2, as I'm not a fan of direction the story took.
