Why did the anime turn into shit?

I am not here to hate, I just wanted to ask a simple question -
Basically , 90% of the people who watched SAO agree that the first few episodes of the first season were really good, and then it just went downhill.
Is there a reason why they did this? Did the selling change them? I mean, it had a huge potential but the characters turned into shit instead of actually developing.
Again. i'm not saying its bad nor here to hate, I just think it could've been way better and it had a lot of wasted potential.

It was always kinda bad in some major regards. It's just that the Alphein arc made that apparent. Also, most of the arcs here are better than those of the first season writing-wise, especially the final arc.

Being wrong is just an occupational hazard.
