Some character development it seems. Looks like Shinji found something to fight for.(?)

Shinji runs away but returns by the end of the episode. Looks likes he made two friends. I hope nothing bad happens to them... in this series I really don't know. Man, they sure did save a lot of money this episode. While I do like that there are quiet moments there sure were a lot of stills. But this was back then so everything had to be hand drawn.

It also looks like we'll finally get to have a proper introduction for Rei next episode. Which leads me to the ED.

It has the moon, water(ocean?), and Rei and is during the night. I wonder if all these things have some sort of connection? Rei seems to be spinning and falling down(drowning?). Only time will tell if any of these things are related or not.

But of course...
And if we follow this logic, they were also trying to spare on the dubbing budget.

The train station scene is clearly made as it is to convey something. It's called the art of directing.

@Rayl1ght You can never have enough of Hayashibara's voice. ;)
As for the static plans scene, you can see this kind of scene treated like that by live directors and nobody will ever blame them. It has the same (positive) effectiveness here so I don't really see a problem.

Also, I wouldn't expect a pure scifi action show if I were you. (I'm not trying to mock you, just a warning)

I haven't been this captivated by an anime since watching Steins;Gate way back in August of last year. NGE is great stuff so far. Really hope the quality continues.

Also, I really love this show's opening.

It speeds up. Or at least, no episode after this is as minimalistic as this one. This one felt like a one-off tribute to the pure visual storytelling of directors like Ozu and Tarkovsky. It's a highlight of the series I think, really conveys Shinji's insecurity and crushing loneliness outside his new 'family' situation, and sets the precedent for his behavior later on.

At the same time, this kind of subtle characterization is the major strength of this show (despite its didactic psychoanalytical reputation), so if you hated this ep there's no guarantee you'll like the rest.

Yeah even if I hated this episode ( maybe because I'm not used to realistic characters reactions and I expected something like Gurren Lagann or something ), I like the series a lot, this episode was just boring because it was 20+ minutes long but I felt like the story didn't move an inch

I really loved that episode. I adored the atmosphere of the world, that they showed. This huge citiy, that's mostley deserted. The constant chirping of the cicadas, that gives it this natural feel. I may slowly fall in love with this show. I also liked, that Shinji maned up at the end.

Still not seeing this kid as annoying. Love everything so far, and I actually like Shinji.

Now I can understand why, if he continues to be whiny even after deciding to stay and realizing that he isn't actually forced to do anything, people will hate him. But i'll have to see before i decide.

he's very realistic. it'd spend more time pitying him than hating on him. he's 14.

Seems Shinji recovered a bit from his depression after talking with his school colleagues, that punch clearly messed up with him. "What I am doing? I am the one that should be beaten! I'm weak, I run, I am dishonest". When he decides to not take the train seems he decides that he needs to prove himself: "I don't want to run anymore, I need to confront the problems".

Also take in account that he is 14 years, a shy guy, he doesn't have any family to support him, he hasn't seen his father for 3 years and when he sees him he realizes that he is called by him just to be used. Also he is told that he is the only one that can pilot a giant robot that is the only thing that can protect the earth against the angels. It does look too much for me for a depressed character like him to hold without any problems.

This episode was slow-moving and didn't have a mecha battle, but instead focused on Shinji's internal conflict and rather or not a mentally unstable 14-year-old is suitable to go to war.

The realistic answer is "no", which Misato seemed to realize (she got mad at Shinji for his attitude, but I think she's more scared for him than anything else), but it appears the answer we'll be going with for now is "yes."

"Welcome home."

To people who complain about Shinji: You want to see a mecha anime from Gainax about a young boy piloting a big-ass robot to fight alien creatures, is frightened and insecure at first but learns from his overly charismatic mentor and turns into a badass in a constant spiral of adrenaline and awesomeness.

You people want Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, so instead of complaining about NGE not being TTGL go watch this other show. Just because in both shows a kid gets into a huge anthropomorphic machine they are not bound to be alike. NGE is not meant to be easy to watch, if you can’t stand Shinji’s wimpyness this show probably isn’t for you.

Not much story progression but a lot of surprising characters interaction. If I was watching this in 1999, I would be loving the gorgeous scene in this episode, it's still a good view in present time though.

That 1 minute of no movement or of characters really add to the effect but at the same time it's painful and a waste of time! However, since this show is not getting enough budget, it's alright to have this kind of scenes sometimes...

It's getting deeper and darker...

A hedgehog's dilemma: When you try to get close with people, you end up hurting them.

This was a psychological episode at its good ways. I have a feeling that Puella Madoka Magica ripped off this anime. The thing about 14 year olds able to do the stuff, the psychological shit, everything.

I still have no idea about what this anime is all about. Only thing I know is that some monsters made sure humans stay underground and battle them every now and then using Mechas. The full metal jacket part of the episode was amazing, where the friend tells Shinji about his dealings with loneliness and we see a newer aspect to what depression can do to you.

Shinji got to witness some of that action in the theater anyways. I like that the dialogues between them are paused for effect in dramatic style and nothing feels rushed. Nowadays anime is much different and there needs to be a comedic cheap writing for getting people to watch anime. But this, this is true story telling. You let the episode feel long so that the audience feel the dramatic impact.

It is not gonna be easy to finish watching this anime. Yet, I believe that this is definitely worth it.

Without change,we end up becoming the very person we hate.

Liked this episode the least from the first 4, but it was still pretty good.

It was interesting to see Misoto suffer, just wasn't sure if she was sad because her companion/roommate/protégé left her, so she felt lonely again, or because she wanted what's best for him, for him not to be alone
Probably a little bit of both, I guess.

Cannot say that the end scene with the silence was moving, but it was special, definitely.

Loved how Shinji escapes, but as soon as they find him, and tell him he's coming back, he submits. He really, like he well knows himself, has no backbone.

Although, I guess that by deciding to stay, he actually made a decision that he is adamant about, for the first time.
Unless he changes his mind again. :D

they pounded the idea into our heads for 3 episodes that the kid is a confused wuss with tons of (whether for bs reasons or not) emotional baggage, just to spend an entire 4th episode on the same thing. We already saw his classmates change resolve and feel guilty earlier, the whole thing could have been wrapped up more quickly, as no one in this episode developed whatsoever.

Episode 4 is on my top 5 favorite episodes of NGE. I like to call the episodes 1-4 as act 1 and episode 4 is a great ending for this first part. Despite seeing Shinji as a coward you really understand his suffering and why he is running away. And it also have a great inspiration (Schoperhaur Hedgehog's Dilemma)

Yeah, I think Episode 4 is an underrated statement in Evangelion's history. It is filled with slow-paced scenes where Shinji escapes his fears for the first time and even if there is not a fight or something exciting happening on-screen, every character shows up a little bit on how they are: Shinji is brutaly hit by the reality and he flies away, Misato realizes how Shinji is feeling and understand how selfish she was being, Kensuke has no family at all and he decides to spend life as he want to...

I personally loved the 4th Eva episode, and it stands a favourite in the show to me.

Running off aimlessly without anything in hand to think about life wasn't the smartest idea but fortunately, the guys from NERV had the courtesy to escort him back to the robot where he deserves to be.

The guy who socked him had a newfound respect for Shinji after seeing how difficult it is to pilot an Eva and it's nice to see him gladly accept a fist to the face to make things even between them.

I am currently rewatching Eva for the third time in my life and every rush is different from the last one. This chapter is so great, it show us how Shinji Ikari and Misato Katsuragi really are, and how they feel about each other.

I think this is one of the greatest Eva chapters (I have to think if I want to find a bad chapter itself) because of how much can say without words. Conversations are so fluid and smooth they look pretty realistic, it is what you would say in that situation, it is not stupid dialogue, there are not empty words, every single phrase has its own meaning and it's close to perfection.

I am rewatching Eva for the third time in my life, and now it is not a good time for me. This show can always cheer up me and even it looks depressing, it is great for how I am feeling actually.

That long silence though at the end.

Still, I'm glad Misato is starting to understand why Shinji is acting like this. Although it kind pisses me off at times, I do understand why he's acting like this.

It's hard to take in all the shit has happened as just a 14 year old.

Also, seeing the places he went. And that movie theater we're everyone didn't gave a shit about the movie, just doing their own thing: sleeping, reading and someone was even making out.

Ahh the 90s!

Next episode, more Rei goodness!

I've always loved those scenes at the end. Yes they saved money with the still frames, but so what?!! It's so well directed/acted that it's just really powerful. A wonderful example of SHOW, DON'T TELL, that many modern shows with their incessant long dialogues simply don't anymore.

I'm starting to remember why I didn't like this series the first time around. Sure there's a lot of character exploration here that develops Shinji's relationships with people, but that doesn't make it entertaining to watch. I could almost feel my pulse coming to a stop watching this.

i think this episode was really well done, it showed shinji's personality and the internal struggles he is dealing with in coming to terms with the reality of the situation, his lack of father presences that he wanted and thought he would get if he piloted, his realization that its not going to be what he thought and the pressure to save mankind as a 14 yr old. He also was facing the loneliness in this new city and feeling ostracized from peers and Misato a bit as well as dealing with his own shy and timid personality that he now knows he must face and grow from. This episode highlighted how he felt forced to do something and was just operating on autopilot with no drive or care for what he was doing. how that changed into now voluntarily staying in the end, learning to be courageous will help him be a better pilot. I like that he was given a choice in staying or leaving and now he has a firm resolution. I think hes really strong because he is facing all of this head on and growing instead of going home like the other kids as implied.

Really surprised so many people are annoyed with Shinji, and equally surprised with the amount people just saying "he's 14" cuz I don't think that's really the point of how he acts either. I think Shinji has been a really enjoyable character so far, and it seems like he doesn't have 2 dimensional emotions like most characters I've seen. So much more believable even though I would've been way more freaked out about some of the things he's been going through, like getting asked to pilot the Eva.

Can't wait for the rest of the characters to come in, cause I know some characters haven't been introduced yet, and they did mention another kid coming in. At the same time, they also talked about 14 year old kids being able to pilot. I don't know if that's supposed to mean children, or specifically 14 year olds.

Pacing, music, and a lot of the scenes are beautiful. Such a good episode.
