Utaha is love, Utaha is life! Best girl!
This episode was hilarious!
And Aki asking for "Make me a man" was funny!
This anime is underrated. This needs much more love from the fanbase though :l
Still can't choose between Aki x Utaha and Aki x Kato :(
That Kato at the end of the episode was really cute though!!
Can't wait for the next episode!! :D

I saw this a few miles ahead, or kilometers (outside of US). I always found it funny how she would always react badly whenever he rejected her "writing", I guessed that she internalized her past, traumas and anything related to her history as related to her series/novel like how one would say "What were you to do if... you were a friend... and so and so.. happened?". Considering the statement "So what's wrong with having a character that is burdened by his/her past?" which is congruent with what you are saying. Utaha is certainly a likeable character though with respect to her quirks, kuudere nature and playful/teasing nature hinted near the end with a questionable selfie picture.

Actually I feel the most compelled and emotionally involved whenever I write something that is self-reflective about my values and my life history, and I could on some level empathize with what it is like to be negatively judged from an outsider's perspective. I usually don't share my feelings or personal thoughts from my first-person perspective, in a historical sense, so when I do, it would be quite intimate, albeit she does this as a novel under the pretext as such which sorts of dis-identifies her in some regards but nevertheless this feeling of disattachment, apathy and disdainment from the rejection of her character is something I can relate to (she also says something earlier about how she hates it when her nemesis critics make some blog posts about her novel in past episodes).

It makes sense though. When you put a lot of time, thinking, and emotional investment into something you create, there are ought to be things that you take very dearly because like it or not, that work will somewhat be a representative of you on some level. Obviously it's not an autobiography but what you thought and what you believe is there somewhere and in the case of Utaha, who she is and how she thinks is evident in Sayuka.

@Kaioshin_Sama
Equally with that reasoning, isn't it also completely possible for a show to panders AND offer something intellectual? Why can't a show for young people panders and also offer something intellectual? If you don't like the fanservice, it's perfectly fine but don't let that make you wear blinders and become blind to all the deeper meaning of the things that transpire in the story. I think that just as it's important to be able to step back and think about why you watch a show, it's also equally as important to step back and watch a show and see what it offers besides what you believed it to be. I know people who talked about how simple and 1D a character was even after they watched a recent episode that showed the complexity of that character but they refused to see it because of what they believed to show to be as. Don't be like that.

Although to be fair, I have more info about this show then most viewers so I know the depth that this show has to offer. However, it does not make my points any less valid because the reason why I got to this point in the first place is the very same reason I listed. There are many shows out there that have nothing to offer. But there are also many shows out there that offers something but you will need to look through it. Generalizing the show really quickly is a good way of choosing your anime to watch but the side effects are also equally as dangerous since it's a "lazy" way for you to not carefully analyze a show to see what it actually is and what it actually has rather than what you believe it is to be.

IMO if a show is so deep then it should be able to speak for itself rather than having to have it's cake and eat it too and throw fanservice at the viewer while trying to say something more meaningful. I had the same problem with Monogatari (which many people seem to think is some masterstroke work but which I just see as an self-indulgent author, an increasingly growing and loathsome trend among LN writers I should mention, jacking it in my face) where it feels like these kinds of shows are thumbing their noses at me and being patronizing and it's not something I really appreciate, especially from this author who I know for a fact can do much much better than this. It's just a huge turnoff. It really doesn't help that WA2 characters felt a lot more plausible by comparison whereas these ones just come off as either annoying, insufferable or just kind of implausible wish fulfillment characters for otaku. And again it's not like this author doesn't know how to right about characters that aren't just typical ones like the mega genius hawt author babe or the loudmouth otaku that's the most otaku otaku there is and a horrible excuse for a human being that somehow is able to influence these characters lives in some twisty positive way that really doesn't make a whole lot of sense when you think about it.

Also and I think this is where I differ from a lot of people these days, but I think it's up to me for shows to meet me halfway, not the other way around for me to entertain their IMO kind of BS attempts at threading a deeper narrative at the same time they're thrusting cheesy fanservice in my face. No other medium does this like anime has tried to of late and I find it more laughable and insulting than anything. Like either choose one or the other the otaku wank nonsense or the more involved narrative, not both at the same time or it's kind of no dice for me.

Why are people taking this so damn seriously? Did it every portray itself as anything other than a fun and self aware RomCom?

This episode was so much fun, probably the best episode so far.

Because it is written by Maruto, the author of WA2, so high expectations are expected from the audience. Welp, I'm just glad Utaha is being animated even though the character designs are vastly inferior to the manga/LN.

I mean that's why I gave it a look in the first place but from the get go I think it was pretty clear that it was supposed to be much more light-hearted and less serious than WA2 so it seems silly to me to complain about that when we are 6 episodes in (7 if you include episode 0).

We could blame the producers for promising there are more things to come here. Though that is true based from what I read so far, the way they do it seems to suggest that there is an impending game changer that will make us view this series on a very different light. And in return, we just got another fanservice and some minor (or major - depends how you view it) character development.

From what i heard from the Light Novel reviews it's actually pretty serious at some points. So that's what got me interested.

And LOL at the people complaining about the episode because it was Fanservice.

People should really just accept the fact that most anime's do this today. Not to mention it was UTAHA, the things she did was in line with her character traits she's a sly, sexy, aggressive Onee-san. If Kato did this however then it would be a different story altogether.

People claiming the episode boring as fuck simply because their " best girl " wasn't part of this episode.... *facepalm*

Everybody loved last episode because Kato was in it. In terms of plot though there was nothing there but a date it didn't push the plot, same with this episode.
So why the hate and complaints this episode was to expand more on Utaha's character and to let the viewer's see a different side to her. Just because Kato was barely in this episode people already failed to see the significance this episode showed for the rest of the story.

So the producer is begging people to watch this specific episode of the show and the impression is it must be some major game changer episode that lifts it up out of pure mediocrity when really all it is just some dumb fanservice stuff. Why am I not even remotely surprised, it's always a lowest common denominator thing in these cases like every single time. Anime just has nothing this season, like absolutely nothing. Not even a mere hint of creativity or entertainment or something even remotely off the beaten path aside from some second halves of some things and carryovers from Fall. Really brutal.

Also voice acting now apparently means screaming absolutely every single dumb line (and this script is REALLY dumb) at your co-star like Matsuoka which is totally not annoying to listen to at all after a minute or so. I'm beginning to see why a lot of people don't like this guy much, he really doesn't have any range and is just starting to become annoying the same way Yuki Kaji is for very similar reasons of just being loud and annoying a lot of the time in his roles.

For every aspect of WA2 that felt so genuine when it came to the characters and their interactions and where so many anime that try to do romance anime fall incredibly short this is about as insincere as they come. Why are you still watching then? all you do is complain, enjoy it or move on! Don't waste your time.

This episode focused on Utaha. Pretty expressive especially for the decent amount of fanservice.
That picture though. I wouldn't mind it if I was in it. Utaha's face after Tomoya's scream was priceless.

Gotta love Utaha she's almost close in being the best girl for me. Makes me hope she end up with him. As as when I'm liking her more, the after-credit scene reminded me Katou is the best girl.

Its really difficult who the ultimate best girl is even thought Michiru hasn't shown yet. Makes me want to route for a harem end even though its impossible.

As much as I enjoy fan-service, I picked up this show because I'd read about the serious story and the psychological interactions between Tomoya and his "harem" as portrayed in the manga and LN.

Admittedly I like all the semi-naked girls as much as the next guy, but given this was suppose to be an adaptation for a story that's already compiled seven volumes and counting, you would expect the director and producers to at least follow the plot of the story sufficiently to render at least some coherence for fans of the actual story, instead of dragging out what they currently have at the moment just to appease the casual anime viewer here.

Long story short, too much fan-service, not enough story. We're already past the 50% mark here, and Tomoya still hasn't met with his first setback. The pacing of the show and the details that they've chosen to omit from an already fleshed-out story (in the LN at least) are seriously getting on my nerves. As I mentioned before, they haven't even introduced Michiru or even Izumi yet.

I sure as hell don't want some bs rushed ending that doesn't even give viewers the least bit of background on the actual plot of this story.

Probably the worst episode so far & the last episode of this anime show for me. The flashback part was absolutely cringeworthy & so melodramatic. It's so out of place. This episode really ruined the whole vibe that the show had. It went from entertaining to cliche boring fan service and overused tropes. This shit really needs to stop. And Matsuoka needs to calm down and put some character into his lines. I hope this show doesn't go downhill from here, but it's not looking good. I predict two more character focused episodes that will follow the same structure.

The other guy criticize a person, not a product. And let me remind you again that we are here to discuss an anime, whether you want to criticize it or praise it, go ahead. But do not attack a person. Come on! Really? Just . . .

theres not enough fanservice and whoever says there is has some clearly fucking huge issues, wtf some foot shots while shes talking is suddenly big fan service? wow please

anyway this anime is funny in a sense that its been 6 + episodes now which is more than the half and we still havent seen the blue haired girl (blue hair sucks especially considering everyone else is realistic hair color, as it should be) and im starting to feel bad about her lol. Its just so awkward to see her on the OP/ED and she feels like a member and part of the gang but shes still nowhere to be seen and its hilarious , hahahaha, poor girl is like uninvited and unwanted party crasher that nobody called for and shes trying to have fun but then you watch the anime and shes nowhere to be found and i start feeling b ad about her

other than that, blond is hot but meh role
kato is hot but anime too short

not exactly. while they were in close quarters and while she may have feelings for the guy, she obviously was focusing on her current work and her past problems that flowed through it.

anyways, this harem is probably my favorite this season, by a long shot.

I don't think it's ever fair to compare 2 different works, even if they are from the same author. It's true that it's easier to invest emotions into non-cliche (or even "genuine") works like WA2. But this seemingly-super-cliche anime aspect of SaeKano is good for what it offers, as in unique drama in a cliche setting and with cliche characters.
And the author is free to write what he wants. If he can write a masterpiece like WA2 with unique, and somewhat realistic characters, then he can write a good story with cliche characters too.

EDIT: My vocab is limited indeed, I can only describe SaeKano as cliche... but surely entertaining.
