Tonegawa is the worst type of a persom. He's the prime example of how trashy one can be. taking advantage of what one says in a situation like that... smh

This show just gets more and more eerie, that huddle of spectators was really creepy. Dammit Sahara was growing on me, I wanted him to live. My eyes shot wide open when that old guy said "Even though he's in pain, I don't feel it." It's such a morbid fascination, that he enjoys watching pain he doesn't have to endure.

Such an obvious trap... ''Let's play a game where you could win an unthinkable load of money, which you know nothing about and that I know everything. Oh, and I won't tell you what happen if you lose.''
Kaiji is forever a slave of his system...

Doesn't seem to care at this point, even if it's only a 1% chance that he'll win he's just trying to make the deaths of the other guys worth something.

this is how you do a psychological anime

Psychological does not mean screaming a lot, or having one nightmare, or showing a little fear. It is the study of the human condition. A psychological series, creates IMPACT, something modern anime series like Re: Zero lack.
They took advantage of the contestants' panic during the crossing to make the glass staircases more hidden then they were. It is subtle, it is brilliant.

Just when you thought the villains couldn't be more despicable.
It still amazes me how the smiles, have a layer of subtlety, to them. They're not so over the top it becomes cringe, like in Akame ga Kill. They feel genuinely evil, without the goal being to make them looking intimidating.

Poor Sahara... If only he realized that opening that window in this height is like opening an airplane door 10000 feet from the ground. I didn't expect it too though.

That glass staircase could've been the biggest asspull yet but how they explained that no one could've noticed it because of their desperate situation making them only look forward was good enough~ Kaiji should've kept his mouth shut but now he's gonna have to go through another game lol

E-Card feels more like Execution Cards and I hope that the device in Kaiji's head ain't some Saw-style drill that digs into them if they lose.

Tonegawa angered me so much. Such dirty tricks, I liked Sahara, was hoping he'd live!
The old man's talk was great.

I'm so frustrated.

Knowing this show I should have seen these twists coming, but like the participants of the death game my thoughts were narrowed down to what lies right in front.

But props to the narration, the reveals in this series are incredible.

It's definitely anti-capitalist, and i don't just mean this episode, but it actually goes deeper than that. The part in the previous episode about how people can communicate but can't actually touch one another, and are forced to walk alone was mindblowing and even more unexpected than the casino-capitalism analogy, where the house always wins by definition but only does so because people keep supporting it in hopes that they'll be the ones to be saved. It goes deeper because it actually captures how it feels to live this way, alone against all others, which is very original and one of the things that make this series so unique. In any case, this series has taken me for a ride and i love it.

About this episode, it did feel a little cheap i guess, because for the suspense to work there must be a real chance to win, no matter how small. The rules have to be strict but fair and precise, and offer a slim chance to victory. Otherwise why bother?

The suits had clearly refused their request to turn off the electricity, and even said so (in a private conversation but still). So the explanation was bullshit, frankly, to the point where you wonder why Kaiiji would trust them again. But maybe seeing the big baddie talk with his calm voice inspired some trust in him. Also, digimon tamer makes a good point :

I am anything but disappointed. Listen, we all knew Kaiji was going to get screwed out of the money since there are still 11 episodes left in the show. The only question was, how?

This was a MUCH MUCH better reasoning then just saying he took too long and that the tickets were expired since it accomplishes the task of wanting us to see Kaiji win even more as well as making us hate the enemies even more than we already do.

I personally thought this episode was amazing and the speech that the old man had after Kaiji met him was quite powerful.

Can't wait for E-card next week!

Sahara...why...? ;___; He was a bit of an asshole, but I still mourn for him. It was just...so cruel...to have thought he was victorious and still die...God, I hate Tonegawa and his goons. And his old man. They're all a bunch of psychopaths. They're very clever, yes. And self-aware. And they use pretty words to make themselves look superior because they think they have the world figured out. But they're still a bunch of sadistic, twisted, inhuman shitheads.

Old man asshole thinks he's better than everyone else because, in his mind, everyone else realizes that others must suffer for you to lead a comfortable life and they act like they have sympathy for the ones suffering. To him, the most moral way of existence is to care only about yourself rather than pretending to care about others. While he does speak a lot of truths about the way of the world, and especially about capitalism, his Ayn Rand objectivist philosophy is pretty damn extreme.

I'm curious to see how this E-Card thing plays out...

I think this was the episode where the show immediately got boring for me.

I liked the ship, the walking on the pole, but the cards is when it got very boring to me and I started fast-forwarding.

All the suspense for me was immediately killed for me with this.

ATTENTION-SEMI-SPOILER-BELOW:

I'm currently watching season 2 and am on episode 18 and so far season 2 is far superior, it keeps me on the edge of my seat and it only gets better. The tendency with these shows is that the first season is always better and the 2nd one is crap, but in Kaiji's case, the 2nd is better than the first.

All weebs creatures of the galaxy, hear this message. Those of you who listen will not be struck by western animation. You will no longer know hunger, nor pain. Your Anime have come to lead you now. Our strength shall serve as a luminous sun toward which all intelligence may blossom. And the impervious shelter beneath which you will prosper. However, for those who refuse our offer and cling to their western animation ways… For you, there will be great wrath.

First time watcher here and I am just blown away with how intense this Anime is. Fear is Portrayed so amazingly I am just simply always on edge and I love it! this episode was just down right heartbreaking seeing Kaiji go through all that only to not be awarded with any money but only awarded to another game that can maybe lead to his demise.

Very sad I waited this long to watch this series but none the less I am hooked!

I'm surprised he actually walked on that glass. I expected it to be illusion, or for him to at least get paranoid about such possibility.

Tbh I have to admit I rather like those yakuza guys. They are evil without a doubt, but at the same time logical and often quite righ, especially about their "players" - which Kaiji proved by agreeing for another game.

THIS ANIME IS FUCKING INSANE!
It was obvious that some players were going to die, but i thought at least a few, including sahara and ishida, would make it. This show is so depressing and yet so good.

Yeah, this has to be my very first issue with the series. Even if Sahara's presence wouldn't have worked for the remainder of the season, killing him off like that seems a bit unfair.

Not to mention, they honored the deal of shutting the electricity off, but 1. delaying the electricity and 2. not telling anyone they accepted the deal.

Then to go on to invalidate the tickets Kaiji earned. I thought the whole point of this final balance challenge was to be blunt with the players. Super simple. No tricks or deception.

But I suppose they have to validate the rest of the show somehow. By adding more challenges for Kaiji to undergo. Since Kaiji needs to be wrung out for the plot, he needs motivation to gamble more -- that motivation being that everyone died for seemingly nothing.

Sahara's death is kind of dumb. As for the voiding of husband/father's ticket.

I was kind of hoping that, unbeknownst to the players, that there'd be a safety net down below catching everyone. 😂 In one of the episodes, the 'vice' boss was saying that the players might actually get to "understand" his ideologies via the challenge -- that they'd be "rehabilitated". I was hoping the challenge would turn out to be a little noble, and try to make "bums" harder working. Or something. Guess I was wrong!
