Heh. Well, you know Kimura's gotta be a competent teacher, or they'd never tolerate him. At least, one would hope so.

They get pretty slangy for a subject they don't tend to have a problem with coming right out and saying later. :D

Hmm, I like that thing Sakaki does with her towel. :)

"Have you grown brittle and dry?" :D

Okay, Tomo's right in this instance; buoyancy is a little messed up, here...

Hah, never taunt the person who decides how painful your cramp recovery is going to be.

Okay, so he's a competent teacher, cares for the environment, donates to charity... and has a thing for high school girls. These facts do not negate each other.

He's a creepy dude for that one last thing and I don't know why but I'm impressed that Kimura-sensei is honest, I think I could be one of those crying male students at the beginning of the episode. LOL

This show just keeps getting better and better!

Kimura is a funny addition to the faculty characters, although, it's difficult to explain the humour to my house-mate when he walked in to see Kimura trying to watch the girls swimming!

Yeah! Sakaki sure does not have a Japanese build, phew, how much milk does she drink?

Brilliant, Kimura Sensei has made this anime interesting. This is the first episode of Azumanga Daioh that I have literally laughed out load at :D

Up until this point I wasn't sure how much more of this I could take - The comedy was at best mediocre and at worst brain damage in a show, even the OP is insane. But that said, I think I'll stick around a little longer now and give it another chance.

Whatever I end up ranking this anime overall will end up with a bonus point for Kimura in this episode.

^That next episode includes, if I remember well, the most close-to-ecchi shot in the show, and yes, it's Sakaki's.

But whatever, this was a subpar episode for me. And when I say subpar in the context of Azumanga, you can translate it as "merely good".

So why it doesn't work in the level of the other episodes? I think it's because this comedy style is completely out of the mood of Azumanga. How many sex-related jokes/references do we have in the whole show? If there are ten, maybe eight of them are compressed in this episode. It's not that I don't like this style of comedy, but in this show it feels out of place.

Also, I think the slapstick here is a bit more crude than usual. That scene with Chiyo drowning was bordering the line of disgusting.

Of course Kimura has a great appearance but I would say I prefer this character in low doses and not starring in a whole episode, because at the very first he is not that interesting as a character as the rest of the cast, but more like a recurrent joke appearing sporadically in the show. I find him quite flat and uninteresting outside of his comedic contribution and when it becomes excessive, like in this episode, it's less enjoyable.

I'm giving it 6.5 points out of 10. The fact I give this grade to -IMO- the worst episode of the series surely says something about how much I love this show.

Agree. Glad that it isn't going to become a bigger theme of the show. I like pervy comedy from time to time and in small doses, but that's not why I'm watching -this- show.

Am i the only one who finds this anime kind of boring? I enjoyed Lucky Star and A-Channel a lot but this is just dull.

Oh yeah, and we have another pedo character... Why do every slice of life/moe anime need to have one?!

You need to go back and understand when this aired. It's BECAUSE of this show that so many of the things you see in it are nowadays so common and overdone - from jokes to character archetypes. It wasn't the first - but it was the first to do them all successfully and in one package, the same goes for SoL at all, this was the first sign that this style of show was VIABLE because those before it were very poor sellers and, aside a few slice of life manga, seen as a shitty non-doable idea overall. Moe wasn't even a used term when this aired either, so it'd be best if you stopped referring to it as a "moe" show.

Basically, you're watching this NOW and seeing "wow this is just reused jokes and characters" but you need to keep in mind this is what ORIGINALLY made those things so popular that they are copied and seen in everything NOWADAYS. It's not copying or rehashing anything - it's the stuff you've seen that was doing so copying THIS. Basically, the fact you think it seems so generic and boring and cliched is BECAUSE it STARTED those things and it just shows how huge of an impact it had on the industry given it's still used as a point of reference even TODAY.

In the end it'd be like watching Cowboy Bebop and whining about how it's just a ripoff of samurai champloo - you're complaining in the wrong order entirely. To put it simply - Azumanga helped in a huge way to make SoL and comedy in anime what it is today, so you'll see it in everything. It didn't do the ripping off, everyone else did that to it - and thus made so much in it 'cliche' and overdone.

Before someone sees this and argues about how it wasn't "the very first", I never said it was. I said it was the first successful and clear sign of how viable the style is - and has since been copied in everything from character personalities, designs, and archetypes to the exact jokes.

I take back everything i said back then. Azumanga Daioh is better than any of the other "all-girl high school" anime out there, plain and simple: The characters are hilarious and cute, the voice acting is superb, the music is catchy, the animation is great and there's even an underlying storyline to it, whereas non of the other AGHS anime even try to have a plot.

It's a slow burn sure, but when it gets going it REALLY gets going.

On this, I have the DVD. First disc (first five episodes) was rated MA here. (Equivalent of 17+ depending on where you live). Second disc was rated G. (Family entertainment, for everyone). Some difference. (Though part of it would be down to the ineptitude of the Australian Classification Board.)
