Having Moonlight Sonata play when Reinhard gave the locket to Annerose, brilliant sound direction. Overture to a New War, released in 1993, also uses the same piece, so in this chronological rewatch, it's a great bookend.

The remaining Terraists, even the De Ville who tricked the devout believers, fall for Obestein's disinformation that a recovered Kaiser would destroy the Earth. Feelings of such an insult overpowered any rational thought left. Reinhard was the bait but circumstances, intentional or not, made Oberstein the decoy for Reinhard, buying the dying Kaiser enough time to ensure the best for Prince Alex and entrust his beloved Kaiserin Hilda to consider Julian's proposal for a constitution and parliament.

The last shots in these centuries of warfare were not between the democrats and autocrats. Julian shot a corrupt bishop for Yang, Patrichev and Blumhardt. As Yang said, people, not ideals. Julian his comrades also just saw Archduchess Annerose walking by earlier, the spark of Reinhard's rise to overthrow the Goldenbaum Dynasty. In pen's mightier than the sword fashion, Julian sets out to do Yang's original dream in the era of peace; be a historian.

The last time Mittermeyer was mourning, he saw Reuenthal in Felix, now with his adopted son's first words, perhaps the voice of Reinhard, too. Fittingly, grasping the brightest star.

Took me longer than the first time I saw this as I had other anime to juggle, but it was all worth it.

A masterpiece of political anime. Giving a nation's interests over the rights of the people is a danger that can emerge in any era and system no matter what labels are applied. When the citizens are lazy and want one individual or a small group of them to rally around, it may be an individual like Yang or Reinhard but it could also give way to demagogues like Rudolf and Trunicht. Masters at moving the masses.

That, there isn't a be-all-end-all of history strictly involving two powers or their respective ideologies. When Reinhard used a scorched Earth tactic, what the people in the "liberated" territories wanted from the FPA was not their ideal of freedom but food, something material. Then there's the Cult of Terra bringing forth religious-driven terrorism.

The horrific death tolls of Westerland, fleets being wiped out in volleys or by Thor's Hammer or the historical records of Earth's nuclear war and atrocities that dawn on you. A whimpering imperial guard putting an axe in Schönkopf. A religious fanatic shooting Yang off the battlefield. From start to finish, no one is safe.

The series has its flaws like dry parts, snail pacing, convenient plot twists (e.g. imperials turn braindead when iserlohn fortress is involved), and underdeveloped elements like the Terraists. Additionally the one causing the most grief to us viewers, besides the death of some beloved characters (I personally include the enigmatic and controversial Oberstein in this group seeing how vital he was to the plot), being the Narrator spoiling crucial events. Nonetheless for all my gripes, as a whole I still view this as a great series to follow with its many twists and turns on a true galactic scale, where I can see why it's praised by its many fans to this day.
