| I have Spirited Away in my Top 10 Films of all time (not just anime films or just anime period) and I've seen a hell of a lot, so in my view there really isn't anything comparable in all anime from what I've seen and experienced - at least from the Ghibli canon and a few others, because it's true that some folks have seen a lot more anime films than I as I mainly focus on watching series. I've seen most of the Ghibli canon though and the only film that even comes close in my opinion is Kaguya-hime no Monogatari/The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, directed by the late departed master of his craft, Isao Takahata. The man was a legend who made myth come alive and breathe through ink, and from my perspective a director of talents equal and rivaling Miyazaki and even surpassed in some ways. He's also directed series for TV, like Akage no Anne based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables novel and set in Prince Edward Island, Canada, and it's similarly really beautiful and wonderful; a masterwork in writing, music, and visual art. But as far as films go, yeah, look toward Kaguya. To me it's the only one even close to a peer of Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi. The next would be the other princess - Mononoke Hime. |
