Claymore is one of my favorites, dark and demon themed.

Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne is pretty mature, a hefty amount of torture and nudity

Made in Abyss, though it's more atmospheric with moments of shock, the movie is pretty awesome as well

The closest anime to Tokyo Ghoul, from what I've seen, are probably Shiki, Inuyashiki and Parasyte.

Maybe Peach Boy Riverside is heading for a darker story
A certain Scientific Railgun, Season 2 is kinda dark. But you need to watch at least s1 and perhaps Magical Index 1 first.
Death Parade, as mentioned before.
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. AoT with Zombies
FMAB
Ergo Proxy, though I never completed it
Berserk as absolutely overkill R18+
Claymore, but the ending is rushed and non-canon
Death Note perhaps? It's never too late for an apple
Promised Neverland, but don't go for S2, just pretend there is no ending..
Goblin Slayer. Like Berserk, but less rape

Also would say 86, Black Bullet, Taboo Tattoo, Psycho Pass (only S1 & 2 tbh), Death Note, and Another (it's infuriating tho so if you don't wanna be annoyed don't watch it)

i see a lot of recs for another - i personally did not like another at all, but was into tokyo ghoul. for dark anime that falls in line with tokyo ghoul i would suggest parasyte. def watch akira and death note if you haven’t. others you might enjoy are death parade, devil’s line, ajin (warning: animation is kinda wack), hellsing, bungo stray dogs, and terror in resonance. if you want super dark check out satoshi kon

I would make recommendations, but personally I didn’t find Tokyo Ghoul to be a very dark anime. Maybe it’s just been too long, but I don’t remember the show being particularly dark, so I don’t know what you’re getting at.
