Hajime no Ippo and Kenichi are very similar, mostly by looking at the main characters. Makunouchi is a weakling, Kenichi is a weakling. However, they both train hard and become stronger in order to achieve their goals. Makounouchi wants to know what it means to be "strong", and Kenichi wants to become stronger to protect his friends from harm.

Adrenaline-pumping boxing anime with captivating action and great fight choreography.

Fully agree with all the others recommending Ippo. This is the nearest anime ever to the excitement and hero's journey that is played out in Ippo. Although one is boxing and the other is tennis, the methodical training, characters and epic moments are all there. It won't disappoint.

Both Ippo and Sena are thrown into a world which they have no knowledge about, yet both seem to find their place and their talents which help them rise to the top. Also, they both have a group of friends to support them. The biggest similarity both shows have is both main characters seem like ordinary people, with the potential to become extraordinary, and are thrown into an extraordinary situation in which their natural talents seem to develop at a fast pace.

The two plots are about an underdog in his final year of high school who still doesn't know what to peruse after finishing. That is before he comes a cross a sports discipline he's gifted at. While Hajime no Ippo focuses on boxing and the tone is more serious, Ballroom e Youkoso is about dancing and is more light hearted. With that said, both stories deliver a compelling story about a boy slowly finding his identity and excelling in what he's good at

Although the stories are completely different, the style of comedy and animation are quite similar.

Both classic sports animes about the same sport, yet different storywise.

Ippo and Onoda are very similar in the way they behave. They're both modest and aren't aware of their true physical strength until they are introduced to the solitary sport they play.

Both are epic shows about sports that have determination and maturing as major themes along with comic relief.
report Recommended by Nymphetamine2791
Similar art style, both about sports, although one is boxing the other is street racing. Follows the story of shy underachiever, with a unexpected talent for their sport. Both have romantic side plots and sprinkles of comedy.
report Recommended by Ian-sama
both are high pace fighting anime, good stories and show the main character enduring hardships to become the best.
report Recommended by MasterVolk9001
Both are "real sport" anime (no powers etc), both have really funny characters and good openings, both make you want to play sports, in both you'll see the main character enjoy their respective sport and grow up with it. The main difference is that in Ippo you'll see professional sport, while Haikyuu!! shows amateur sport.
report Recommended by Learco
Even though Capeta starts off younger than Ippo does, the stories have a very similar feel to them. They both have a blue-collar/Rocky-esque vibe to them where the main characters have to overcome financial and mental obstacles to succeed in their chosen sports (go karting and boxing). So if you liked Capeta, I think you'd like Hajime no Ippo too!
report Recommended by lowell
Each series follows a story where the main character is struggling to be the best. Ippo and Hikaru both go through rough times in their conquest to get better. With great character development and comedy thrown in at just the right spots, you don't want to miss this!
report Recommended by Xinil
Tense as hell, adrenaline-pumping, and manly tears-inducing. People pitted against each other. Same studio. Everything else is pretty much different - Kaiji is psychological and Ippo is raw power - but you should give the other a try if you're looking for something addicting.

Both contain boxing, determination and manly dreams.

Great sports anime that are realistic with great character development.

fighting spirit I guess a lot of fights but in this case *legal* fights ... no killing though I still consider it as a similar anime

Well you probably wondering how come this two anime's are similar ? The answer is quite simple, in both the main characters are new in the field of the sport they "playing", and were they are trying to become one of the best! Also a lot of delinquents action so the figthing is mutual in both anime's :) And must not forget the comedy that is present, it's probably better than in some animes that are focused on only that ! :)
report Recommended by ElemenT
Both main characters are incredibly similar, almost to a T. They have low self-esteem, are often bullied, when one day a famous figure steps into their life to help them become the person they want to be. Both (a boxer and a hero) will require a great amount of training and combat trials. Ichiro and Todoroki are also relatively similar in personality and how their relationship with the main character unfolds.

Enjoy watching people play a sport and get better and better at it? Hajime no Ippo and Major (all seasons) both give you exactly this. While Goro (Major) is more on the "genius" side, and Ippo is more on the "hard working" side, they both strive toward their goals with extreme passion. If you enjoyed one, you'll definitely enjoy the other.
report Recommended by Xinil
In both we can see the heartwarming story of the protagonist seeking to realize their dreams.
report Recommended by YudiSaca
While the skills of the main characters are on opposite ends (one being pro quality and the other a beginner), both series follow the road to the top. Both series give great history on the designated sport so if you're unfamiliar with it, things will be explained throughout each episodes. Comedy is also thrown in every once in a while. Don't like sports? Don't worry, you don't have to!

I know what you are thinking: What does boxing anime have in common with a sci-fi samurai comedy? Well to be perfectly honest, almost nothing. If you enjoy each for their story, then this recommendation isn't for you. Now with that out of the way, the reason I recommend these titles together is because they have the same foundation; and that foundation is toilet humor. If you enjoy the perverted jokes that are very present in Ippo, then you will love Gintama, because each episode is about 18~ minutes of that.
report Recommended by TurtleHermit
They both have the same brand of humor. Additionally, both can draw you into the emotional moments of the story. Luffy is on a quest to become King of the Pirates, Ippo is on a quest to become stronger (aka, win the world feather weight championship). The composition, the mix of humor and seriousness, is the same. It doesn't really have similar setting and world , but that feeling you get from both anime are the same. Both are as great of a shonen series as the other.

Hunter x Hunter (2011) and Hajime no Ippo are both about a boy who want to follow in their fathers footsteps. Gon Freecss of Hunter x Hunter (2011) wants to become a professional hunter. He wishes to do so because his father left him when he was young to continue being a hunter. Gon wishes to discover why. Makunouchi Ippo of Hajime no Ippo wants to know the meaning of "strong". He sees his father to be strong, and wants to be like him. He becomes a boxer to pursue this goal. Both anime show the struggles that their respective main character goes through.  read more

Before Hajime no Ippo there was Ashita no Joe, same theme about boxing and only boxing. If you like Hajime no Ippo you will most likely love Ashita no Joe season 1 and 2.

Took a bit of getting into but good for sports anime fans. Very good characters and slightly more realistic than Ippo but an enjoyable watch all the same.

Both anime have preety simmilar "From zero to hero" feel, and bullied, hard-working type main character. Furthermore they were both made by Madhouse Studios, however Hajime no Ippo is way better animated, but yet Beck has better soundtrack. Well, check by yourself and hope you like them.

Both shows have very similar main characters. Ippo knows nothing about boxing , Shun knows nothing about gymnastics. However they have some unknown inner strength and a lot of determination to win.

Both have sports themes, with a character that has an extra special talent. Both involve strategy and a character that struggles to win competition. I just watched one outs and now am enjoying ippo immensely.

Both Ping Pong and Hajime no Ippo are anime based on sports, with Ping Pong being about table tennis and Hajime no Ippo being about boxing. What makes these two anime similar is the character development: both Ping Pong and Hajime no Ippo focus on several character, all with unique personalities and skills. Both focus on exploring the motivations these characters have for practicing these sports. Ping Pong and Hajime no Ippo also deal with similar themes, like for example: talent vs effort etc.

It’s really easy to get into other kinds of sports anime if you love at least one, but I often thought while watching this show: “Diamond no Ace is the Hajime no Ippo of baseball”. The sense of humor and approach to the characters felt so similar, there’s no doubt that Ippo was an influence on Daiya imho.

Defo very similar in character development as Ippo. The weak but limitless lead character that is being bullied and the serious/ace senpai etc Ippo is one of the best animes ever, and my favourite. Defo recommend to a fan of Over Drive.

You my think how are these two similar one has to due with boxing and extreme workout while the other also has to due with training but this one has powers. Well Hajime no Ippo and Katekyo Hitman Reborn are alike. Both main characters start as wimps like they are no good. The main characters work there way up from being weak to being strong and they never give up. They both go through extreme training and they may complain but in the end when they are in a tough spot they out of the blue find a way to win. Both are long running  read more

Both are sports anime that focus on boxing. Both anime have many great fights, sometimes with unpredictable outcomes, and also a lot of character development. They provide an in-depth look into the world of boxing, and show the struggles that boxers often have to face.

It's similar in the sense that the MC is introduced to a sport, and then through them we dive into that world, accompanied by a gallery of interesting supporting characters.

Both anime have similar art and humor. They also have perverted characters who'd do anything to get laid. There are quite a few action scenes in both anime, and they are fairly realistic.

Okay, this is a wacky recommendation since both are different in target audience and content, but they are very similar overall. Both series have a simple but meaningful story about pursuing goals and overcoming trials featuring very realistic characters with very realistic motivations set in the real world. And if this helps, both are very simplistic and comedic in style with great execution: no overly idealistic deep dialogues, no unnecessary complexities of any sorts, no moe, no fanservice, no edginess or whatever that plagues today's industry. Both star main characters, who come from poorer families, who want to be the best boxer. Joe Akamine, and Ippo Makunouchi, not only have timid personalities they have to overcome near the beginning, but they even somewhat look the same.

Hajime no Ippo feels similar like when Ippo join a club a being dedicated to something is kind of similar to how Grand Blue characters feel about diving while boxing part may resemble any part of Grand Blue it is still very fun to watch character struggle and grow through the story and the no.1 reason I would recommend this is that the gag and comedy hits really hard it is better than 90% of the comedy anime out there and the way some dude bonding and messing with each other is quite similar to how Grand Blue handle it's gag and characters

Yuri on Ice (YOI) Hajime no Ippo (HNI) YOI and HNI are similar because they both are sports animes, have a very interesting main character who acts as the center of the story, but at the same time acts as a perspective. For example, in HNI, and YOI Ippo, and Yuri act as the standard of skill because we (the viewer) have seen them the most. Both characters suffer from some sort of anxiety in the beginning of the show and began to overcome it, for Yuri it is his performance anxiety, however for Ippo it is his quietnes  read more

This series is not really similar to cowboy bebeop, with the only simularities I can think of being the animation style age wise, the amazing fights that are both very different from each other yet still each is great, and the fact that I gave them both a 10.

The strong point of the series are the great, loveable set of characters and both series abilities to portray... Well, life in a way. You empathise with almost every character at some point and become invested in them. Gokusen is of course not a sports anime but it has the same feel as Hajime no Ippo, the perfectly balanced mix of wacky/genuine and even some mysterious characters with some moments of seriousness. I wanted to write this recommendation because while I was watching Hajime no Ippo, thoughts of Gokusen kept popping up in my head, because of the likeness in "feeling". They are both kind  read more

In episode 8 among others of hajime no ippo, we can see the similarity between the two protagonists, ippo thinks the same as seiichirou, ippo thinks his trainer is suffering just like seiichirou thinks with the characters, just like seiichirou thinks with the characters, it's not just that, you notice the charisma among them, among other things.

(Recommendation is for air master if you watched hajime no ippo) If you're like me you enjoy a good fighting anime once in awhile and really you're only choices are this History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi, ayane's high kick or baki the grappler, and i couldn't recommend those without a heavy heart. I stopped watching Air master because I didn't believe it good enough to waste my time reading subtitles every so often (found a website that had half subbed and half dubbed every other episode). But if you don't mind reading subs and enjoy a good fighting anime i would definitely recommend it.

Both are sports anime that involves having 2 characters trying to accomplish to reach their goal to be one of the best and hard-working sports player. Trying to pursue a career for both takes a lot of patience for both main characters in each anime, so definitely both animes are very magnifying to see each characters trying to attain their goal.

Golden Kamuy takes its slapstick comedy from the pages of Hajime no Ippo, and like Ippo, punctuates this with very well-written suspenseful arcs filled with action and intrigue. Kamuy comes into its own with the incredibly unique and eventually beloved characters, most of whom are crazy in a fun way. The personalities of Kamuy shine throughout and by the end of season 2 it becomes a true diamond in the rough.

Now I know what you might be thinking, boxing and biking and not much alike, but the story i have seen so far in Ride Back seems to indicate these two animes have alot in commen. Rin Ogata and Ippo both find a new thing to do with their lives, they are both a bit lost when they are not doing the thing they love in the ring and on the race course and they work hard at their new dreams. Both anime follow the journey of somebody who keeps fighting on to make their dream a reality. These journeys both include plenty of training, victories, and a few defeats. But what really makes them similar is the style of comedy they use on the side.

The protags and/or MCs both start off as weak, undetermined, and lacking individuals but learn through experience and friendship what it means to become strong and better person. Both anime make you feel like accomplishing more with your life and reflect on your past and predict the outlook of your future. Also both anime will make you laugh your ass off and cry.

This is something i personally think. Not many people even know of Hungry Heart, which is just sad. It's a fact, that this is the best football anime ever made, and none other comes close to that, sadly. It has such good quality and at the same time, the humor/comedy is quite similar to Hajime no Ippo's one. They are both hilariously overdrawn slapstick comedies and have geniusly loveable characters. If you loved Ippo, Hungry Heart definitely won't disappoint you. And if you watched Hungry Heart first, well, then go ahead and watch Ippo. It's as good as Hungry Heart and even better.

I just have to say Hajime no Ippo is an amazing anime and Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai can qualify as a hentai. Lets just call it SITN for now. I thought they are sort of similar after finishing SITN's first episode. They're both about doing these fighting sports where nobody could ever think this person would have the strength or the guts to do. They each have a goal and each work themselves up from people telling them they can't do. Someday, though, they will do it.

Both themes are boxing. But the way of being a boxer was different. Both VERY funny in their own way. In my opinion both are very epic and exciting. Their personalities are VERY different or rather they are complete opposites.

Our protagonists decide to build up their inner and outer strength to overcome those who have attacked them at the start of both series. (Ippo was simply bullied, while Eren's mother was devoured by a Colossal Titan.) The real rise in action is preceded by a training arc. And SnK's titular Titans happen to be champion-level boxers, just like Hajime no Ippo's.

Main character small, black hair, with a very familiar hard worker mentality. It's all about the love of the game and growing stronger a step at a time. Unlike boxing it's a team sport but the tournaments are still there and everyone's aiming for the top. it has many of the same sports morals, training, wins and losses.
