A boy discovers that the idol of the school is a secret otaku. He befriends her and helps her become more accepting of her otaku ways. The difference is the male MC in "Tonari" is more of an otaku, while the male in "Nogizaka" (so far) is limited to casual manga reading. Also, the female lead in "Nogizaka" is wealthy (complete with maids), while the female lead in "Tonari" seems to be of average income.

Both romantic comedy series involves an ordinary boy discovering a secret involving a girl who is considered a school idol. From there, they begin to bond and eventually forms a special relationship.
Throughout the series, there is a sense of connection between the two that started out as friends but later turns into something more.
There's also other characters present in both series that interacts with the duo presented in both dramatic and comedic ways.
Both series have a slice of life feeling involving both characters' development with others as well as their own relationship in a school life setting.
