The Horizon has a very dark, psychological, and philosophical way of storytelling, similar to punpun. It’s very gritty and doesn’t shy away from reality, but also contains a hopeful message.

Some of the themes that both series explore intersect such as: of finding meaning in a life filled with suffering, the impact of death, and making sense of the world as a child exposed to the darker aspects of life. Both show depressive aspects and to a certain degree of nihilism. Both have depressive adn tragic main characters and great writing included. Both also have fantastic art incorporated

Both very slow building, emotional and character driven. No other works have portrayed despair as well as these. They are both very nihilistic, but with a hopeful message toward the end. Pun pun is pretty depressing the whole way until the end, while Horizon is an emotional rollercoaster. I can guarantee these manga will give you the feels affect you much more than any Shonen trash.

Both are some of the saddest manga I've ever read. The atmosphere is the same, completely depressing, but there is always hope.
