Multiple factions/characters wants to pursue their ideals and to do so they have to fight other factions/characters whose goals and ideals conflict with that. Fights are usually done with some strategizing involved and death of the characters isn't shied away from. Those novels doesn't really have a main protagonist, it's more of a "pick your side", as the motivations and reasons of their actions are explained in depth for many characters.

Both novels focus on multiple groups with differing ideologies and conflicting goals. They also involve characters on opposite sides who rarely meet face-to-face, and mostly rely on indirect observation and reputation to establish the rivalry between the two. There's also an emphasis on having multiple sides so that there is no one protagonist, but instead every side has a protagonist who serves as an antagonistic force to the others. The conflict between Yang and Reinhard also very closely mirrors that of Kirei and Kiritsugu. Both sides hear of the other's reputation and exploits early in the story and subsequently make plans as the series progresses   read more
