A School Frozen in Time and Angel Beats!: Heaven's Door are two supernatural series about a group of high school students stuck in a high school that they are unable to exit from. Each of these characters have some semblance of a tragic or generally sad backstory that are revealed over the course of the story and develops the characters, and there is a danger of randomly disappearing. These might be a bit too heavy for the average reader unless they are really into drama, though Angel Beats also has quite a bit of comedy.
