Horror anime which seem to rely more on psychological shock than visual shock, though you might get some of the visual as well. A similar "what the hell" mentality is incited when watching either for the first time. There are characters who can be described as yandere in both with a single-minded dedication to their love.

Both are psychological horror anime. Higurashi or When They Cry in English, has more depth in the plot and character developments. It's also more mysterious. Higurashi is also stranger and deals with more topics including mass hysteria, romance in powerful families and... just a whole lotta craziness. While Happy Sugar Life takes place in a city, Higurashi takes place in a small village and at times the neighbouring town.

Both series use the technique of contrasting lighthearted slice of life moments with deep and oppressive horror. Both series delve into psyche's of deeply troubled lead characters.

Happy Sugar Life emphasizes the real life monsters, the rapists and abusers you see on the news. Higurashi is an urban legend that will have you thinking as you watch the cast become more violent and/or deranged. But, they're both some of my favorite horror anime that I will never forget because of how well each of their psychological horror truly is.
