As I was watching Simoun, I couldn't stop thinking about the similarities it shares with Cross Ange. Both anime include a team of girls at a military base who must pilot machines to defend against invaders. Shoujo ai/yuri themes are present in both anime, but Cross Ange has way more fanservice than Simoun. There's a lot of drama between characters, although there's a lot more drama in Simoun, and Simoun gets way more serious than Cross Ange. As the series progress, we learn what happens when the characters unlock the full power of the machines they pilot, and more about the world the characters live
