To put it simply, these stories are in a Highschool, "Post-Apocalyptic", Survival setting. Both shows portrays the drama in living in a world surrounded by "them". Each has it's own way to provide "service to the fans", but at the end of the day it's all about trying to survive in the god-forsaken world they live in. (Also the endings are performed by Maon Kurosaki.)
They both are about survival, horror and zombies.
The only differance is that HOTD is about boobs and Gakkougurashi is more..moe in my opinion.
Both stories entail the survival of high school aged students from the zombie apocalypse. Gakkou Gurashi has a more slice of life feel to it, while HotD is an ecchi anime, but both are decently good watches!
If you like the high school horror zombie apocalypse setting but was not a fan of the eechiness, and more serious tone of H.O.T.D. then Gakkougurashi!? has the exact same setting as H.O.T.D. but instead, they STAY at the school, it's more psychological, there's no eechiness, less bloody, and they're all lolis. Its like a slice of life but zombies are in it, if that sums it up at all, but Gakkougurashi!? is great changing the mood, it can go from a happy, funny moment to the scariest and most unexpected scene ever, Trust me. Both series take place in a zombie apocalypse with a group of Highschool survivors.
Whilst both series have some unrealistic coincidental set of events that provide the main characters with equipment to survive Highschool of the dead is more action based than Gakkou Gurashi but if you want to keep the whole zombie apocalypse theme then Gakkou Gurashi is a great watch .
Highschool of the Dead is an ecchi but as long as you get over that it should be an enjoyable watch if you liked Gakkou Gurashi.

Cute high-school girls destroying zombies! Both Gakkou Gurashi and High School of the Dead can be categorized as 'fan service', be it boobs or just goofy moe humor. Both also have plenty of spooky situations and an environment that forces the main cast to fight for their survival.
They both set in a highschool where theres a zombie apocalypse. Gakkougurashi does have scenes of action. Gakkougurashi is like the safer version of HOTD, if you aren't really into gore (but you love zombie stuff) & ecchi. Gakkougurashi looks more on friendship & bonds, so it's the kind of anime to make you cry. Just like HOTD, Gakkougurashi does have comedy too.
Both of them have real zombies, than another anime with special zombie
If you like students (which is creepy.), and/or zombies. Highschool of the Dead should be just fine
Both animes are about high school students, living in a world taken over by zombies. While Gakkougurashi is a lot less violent and brutal, both animes have quite a few great fighting scenes, as well as emotional and hilarious moments.

A school with zombies and a loli with a puppy. The only difference is that one has boobs (Highschool of the Dead) and the other an emotional story (Gakkougurashi).
