In both animes everything was peaceful, until suddenly people start turning into monsters, zombies in High School of the Dead and vampires in Shiki. Both anime contains an atmosphere of horror and mystery. If you want an anime with blood and slaughter, both are recommended.

Both animes begin with a normal world until an sudden outbreak of undead monsters occur (zombies in HOTD; vampires in Shiki). Soon people have to destroy these and stop them from spreading and killing more people. Both have a lot of blood, gore, action and killing.
Both are kinda similar, in both it starts with a rare decease and people figuring out what it is. Both contains the atmosphere of mystery and horror. The difference in Highschool of the Dead, the story takes place in the city and its about zombies. In Shiki, it takes place in an small village and its about vampires.
