Lyrical Nanoha is an atypical magical girl anime and Kill la Kill has a few elements of magical girls, most notably the transformation sequences.
Both have entertaining action-packed battles rife with cheesy dialogue.
Both have the protagonist fighting against a rival with similar abilities and of similar strength who appears to be aiding her evil, insane mother's schemes. In both shows, the rival eventually befriends and aids the protagonist in fighting said evil mother.
