Paranoia and fear can lead to extreme cases of distortion and alienation; this is a statement that concurs with the worlds of Akira and of PA. In both anime a disorientating feeling of malign confusion completely capsizes the very fabric of reality. How to begin?
Since this is horror, is it okay to describe the emotional feeling as being like a knife to the gut? Style wise both in aesthetics and plot, Paranoia Agent feels much like an Anime of Akira's era, the 1980s, yet the newer series came long after the apocalyptic horror era of the 1980s. The series doesn't play up on nostalgia though, and brings some new modern elements into the mix. Akira though, remains a good starting point for those looking into the past of the genre.
