Both anime series focus largely on the fights between humans and monsters. In Claymore the fighters are all female, in Gantz both male and female. The fights are extremely cruel and bloody, with blood splashing around and chopped-off limbs flying. Both animes are not for the faint-hearted, the plot is serious and interesting.
Basic theme in both shows has hero/heroin on assignment to kill creatures. In both instances the organization/ boss they belong to could easily be considered heartless and evil. Both shows like to depress you by killing characters you like thus giving you that feeling of betrayal by the writers. Oh yeah lets not forget the heavy attention paid to gore so don't watch after eating.
