Both series are fundamentally about coming to terms with every part of one's personality. The socially acceptable and the socially unacceptable. The ego vs. the super-ego. Although the way they explore this differ; NGE uses a mecha context and is definitely the darker of the two in terms of characterisation and plot, P4 on the other hand manages to remain more or less a light-hearted mystery/card-battle in spite of all the murders.
