Both Elfen Lied and Kurau include female main characters that were subject to cruel laboratory work. Both of these animes include science fiction elements and are very dramatic. Elfen Lied is much more graphic than Kurau, but both do include action scenes. Also, they both contain romantic undertones.

The idea of cruel experiments involving the world of science is a strong theme in both series. In fact, the main characters from both series are subjects and contain extraordinary abilities as result of being exposed to such a world.
Both series has dramatic imagery but at the same time emotional moments and bonding between the main characters. Elfen Lied extends more on graphic violence while Kurau Phantom Memory focuses on emotional impacts.
Both series also contains action scenes and explores the world of cruelty involving prejudice, identity, and other social norms.
