Both series put their main characters in psychologically distressing situations, and both of them are about their characters rising above the challenges and owning their fates. Plus, lots of man tears...

Both are psychological thrillers animated by Madhouse about a man fighting for his values in an evil, corrupt world.

There are few stories that can capture the raw terror of a decision quite like Monster and Kaiji. Both are masterpieces of tension, depicting the nervous and disturbed minds of their characters perfectly. While the stories themselves are quite different, the maturity of the themes covered feels very similar. They both have excellent character drama, fantastic music, and some of the best directing in the industry. Kaiji is certainly a bit more goofy considering the premise would be entirely avoidable if not for the characters addictions, but make no mistake: they are both very similar in the quality of their depictions of the human psyche.   read more

In essence, both series features psychological themes involving the main protagonist in a world of twisted aberrations. It is a cruel world in both series and the main protagonist must play his cards right to make the most out of his life. Both has thriller like endings in many episodes. Madhouse is also involved with both series.

This comparison might seem a bit weird to some people, but both anime have to do with the quality of the human soul. The decisions the two protagonists have to take are of the same nature: give in to the monster, or hold on to humanity, even if you might gain nothing in return? The feeling each anime gives is not quite that similar, but the message both shows are trying to get through is the same. I believe if one enjoyed either of these two, they will definitely enjoy the other.

good show that shows the mc get his life upside down or ruined and they work the hardest to turn everything back to normal.

While I only just began monster, I already see similarities between it and kaiji. They're both psychological thriller anime, and portray real human emotion, which is a rarity. The protagonists show empathy and selflessness, which differs from the "heartless" protagonists in new gens today. People may be drawn away because of the characters not being the "attractive" characters we have in newer anime, but there is much more to a character than that which is shown in these anime's.

Thriller anime that gets you into the mind of the protagonist, though Monster is more one story while Kaiji is more separated into multiple arcs
