Both of them have powerful lead characters trying to protect someone. Although they are in a different setting and have a different plot, the similarities are undeniable.

The similarities between Balsa and Michiko is huge! They're both independent, strong-willed females who go all out in protecting a child they're set on defending. Michiko and Balsa both have strong will-power and smarts to outsmart authority figures that are chasing after them and the object (in the cases of both, children) they're risking their lives for.

A strong independent woman ends up protecting a child who she has no relation to. She develops motherly affection for the child as the anime goes on. The child gets stronger by the time. They'll travel together and people will want to kill them, but they won't stop to travel. While Seirei no Moribito may have some supernatural elements, Michiko to Hatchin is very down-to-earth.

Both are road movies with the traveling couple consisting of a warrior type, big-hearted but badass female lead with a shady past and a child she protects. While in both there is a McGuffin to travel to, the character development during the trip and the slow bonding has the main stage. Both feature smooth animation and great art, good fight scenes, recurring and developing side characters.
