The stories of the two lead characters (Nodame and Maya) have a great deal in common. Though Glass Mask is not comedic, like Nodame Cantabile, they both feature female protagonists who exist somewhat outside of their artistic communities. Both are phenomenal raw talents who struggle to find their niche amongst those who may be more technically skilled in their respective fields, but who often lack their same level of emotional committment.

A girl. A young girl with a talent tries to fulfill a dream in both series. They practice and work to perfect their skills. At the same time, they go through emotional moments but also finds peace and enjoy on many occasions. They also meet an individual who is there for her when time calls.
There are those moments present in both series that captures the moments of the realism involving the field of becoming a star. Whether they shine or not, the main protagonist from both series strive to improve their skills. There is passion in their works that is expressed through their actions
