Both series takes place at a school life setting where there is drama, comedy, and romance.
Both series are lighthearted and has a small cast of characters. The main female protagonist in both series has a reserved personality and originally had a different outlook on the main male protagonist.
Both series has its moments occasionally where tension surfaces between the duo. Yet, at times, friendship ties them together that brings them closer.
Very similar humor and it has also a good mix between silly/funny and romantic/dramatic moments.
The main character deals with her inner demons, and tries to figure out what her place is in the world. Although in Kotoura-san, the main character is a lot more bubbly, and friendlier.
Both series focus on character development between different sets of characters, although the characters in both are made entirely as a different cast, the feeling of focusing on the relationships between both. The main girl and guy both struggle to sort out their feelings for another throughout the series.
