If you're looking for a bad anime, you should watch Babylon.
Kww_121 Sep 23, 2023 10:17 AM
There are quite a few anime overlooked because of a bad story even though their visuals/directing/aesthetics are really good, and, if you're looking for bad anime, maybe some of those could interest you?

Pretty much everything made by Shaft/Akiyuki Shinbou (chief director for every good Shaft anime) is worth watching because of that, while his aesthetic peaks in the 90s with Shin Hurricane Polymar (cancelled after two episodes with no real ending), and in the 2000s with The Soultaker (which has a story generally considered to be really bad, but that has a lot of interesting aspects if you pay enough attention. It's also one of the first anime to feature Takemoto Yasuhiro as a director, who then directs the first 2.5 episodes of the spin-off at Kyoto Animation, and later directs Hyouka, Haruhi's Disappearance).

Nanoha, Cossette, Tsukuyomi, Negima, Katte ni Kaizou, Magia Record are all also "bad", but worth watching.

Requiem from the Darkness looks and feels like an Akiyuki Shinbou anime, even though the character designer is the only who had worked with him. It's an episodic horror show with really bad episodes are really good episodes, usually completely overlooked, but a really interesting experience.

Blood-C is another horror anime from the director of Another and xxxHolic, except half of the show is some very generic slice-of-life, while the other half is a lot of gore, plot-twists and connections to CLAMP manga. It's way more of a CLAMP anime than a Blood spin-off, and very fun at times.

There's also Babylon, which people really seem to hate because the quality drops after the first 3, and then the first 7 episodes, but that is a very well written and well directed mystery show, which has a lot of the same appeal as Zaregoto (though with way more flaws).

Yeah Nisioisin's works are really one of a kind and some of my favorite adaptations made and also in general reading the novels have been a joy, I have started on the Zaregoto novels and I truly would recommend, its been great so far! Also I very much agree with you that the dialogue probably is the main part why I liked these types of media so much, thanks for getting back to me!
(Also I think I found your profile on your Mekakucity Actors review, well written!)

A fellow Zaregoto enjoyer, always nice to see that hidden gem of a show favorited, hope you're also doing well!

Your tastes are epic I wish I can follow you. I agree with your mekakucity actors review (Lol everyone's saying that) as I actually experienced the same thing. I watched it and thought it was actually pretty nice. I liked art style was good despite everyone saying how bad it was, and the plot was reltaively easy to follow and I enjoyed it as well. When I joined the discord server, (which I can't get out now) I talked about how I liked it, and despite no obvious claims about how the rest of the people didn't like it, it was shown really clearly that most of the fanbase dislikes it. So when I read about your review, I was surprised about how much that was what I wanted to say. You said what I couldn't. Anyway, your tastes are awesome.

Sorry lol

To be honest Mekakucity Actors use to be one of my favorite animes at the time of my previous comment so reading that it was considered "mediocre" somewhat ticked me off. So I just did the calculations cause I was pressed. Anyways thank you for your insightful reply and if I do anymore calculations I'll be sure to tag you. I hope you have a wonderful day. :)

I have been guided by your review on mekakucity actors that i think really spoke to some of the strengths of the show and its potential.
Masterbos175 Dec 16, 2020 6:08 PM
When you were reviewing Mekakucity Actors you said, "I went into this anime with rather mediocre expectations, considering as well that the average rating was below an 8." By using that logic ALL animes bellow 8 can only be "mediocre" at best. So I did some math and it turns out ONLY 534 animes have above an 8.00 rating. This is out of 17,350 total animes recorded on MAL. Thereby dividing 354 by 17,350 you get .030778098, putting that into percentage form you get, 3.08%. In summary you inferenced that ONLY 3.08% of the animes on MAL are mediocre. No offence but your reviews seem a BIT bias.

Your Mekakucity actors review was really good
Jequ Jan 7, 2015 7:37 PM
Yes, I find it really easy to dwell in the negative aspects of anime. I always try to look a the brighter side of an anime //unless I have an over bias haha.

I was interested with your point of view since I had a really similar view, so I could help but read it all!
no problem, and thank you very much! You too!

I just want to say that I really enjoyed your review on mekakucity actors- since I believe its a unfairly underrated show that a lot of people can't appreciate. It was a breath of fresh air from the reviews that gave it 2s. thank you!
