Yeah. It's useful not only for wii, but for GC driveless mods which is what I'm looking into.
Deserada Aug 16, 2013 3:13 PM
That's excellent thinking. The ideal setup is a passable laptop for high-level use like browsing, email, etc. complimented by a much more powerful desktop for low-level use and for complex operations like gaming.

I'll check them out. I'm in the market for a wiikey fusion among other things. Do you know any good sources for older modchips? I can think of a few, but again I've never personally confirmed their reputation with anyone.

Where did you order your modding supplies from?
Deserada Aug 14, 2013 6:30 PM
This lappy is from tiger direct, though I bought it at a physical store.

I bricked my first one with a BIOS update that hung, and I was also in the middle of throwing a hard drive caddy in, so I unintentionally returned it without any of the screws, just snapped back together.

They're reliable, but it's a lot easier to deal with returns in person. If you have a local store, it should be easy.

What is your modding experience?

That's not a bad laptop, but there are a few ways to look at it that I'd like to address before making another recommendation.

It has a killer video card for a laptop (GT 740M), and at 1366x768 it'll run like a dream, but frankly 1366x768 is quite a low resolution for a 15.6" laptop. You're going to be seeing pixels most likely, and although it's not pictured (they actually censored it in the pictures), I'm sure it has a glossy screen.

EDIT: I'm spoiled or something because 1366x768 seems to be a lot more common than I thought it should be. My other friends that run 15.6" lappys in this resolution don't seem to have any qualms, so don't worry about that. Just consider it a really sweet bonus if you can find something in 1600x900 or higher.

The CPU is low end for a Mobile i5, but not low enough to bottleneck the rest of your specs during gaming. Everything else checks out on the hardware side. For reference, I'm using cpubenchmark.net for my stats.

Because it is a Toshiba, the build quality of the case will be poor, I'm somewhat disappointed to say that they aren't on top of their game in that department. A good indicator of build quality that I've found works in situations like this is the style and placement of the exhaust ports for the fans, I can't really describe the specific details to explain how I notice this though. Higher-end PCs have better quality plastic or aluminum around the exhaust ports, never glossy plastic. Top of the line modern laptops often vent out the back, but that isn't always the case.

The price point seems a little inflated to me, and unless the market has gone up around this back-to-school time, I think we can find a better deal.

Here's what I found so far:

I don't have much experience with MSI products, but I don't hear many complaints and my old MSI motherboard (as of 12 years now) is still chugging along. This particular PC has slightly better specs and much better build quality than the Toshiba, but I'm personally not a fan of the design. Still, it's something to consider.

Newegg is pretty much cleaned out right now on laptops with dedicated graphics. You've chosen the best one at that price point already, props for that. I have to head out for some errands now, so let me know what you think and I can do some more research on this when I get back.

No problem, I hope you enjoy them.

I noticed that you enjoyed Ouran High School Host but you have not seen the Japanese Drama version of it yet. The Drama version of Ouran High School Host Club was pretty good and you might enjoy comparing them. You also might enjoy the drama for Hana Kimi or the movie version of Kimi ni Todoke since you are watching the anime for it now. The Kimi ni Todoke was really well made.

That processor uses a different socket to attach to the motherboard (AM3+) wheras the one I recommended uses the FM1 socket. If you've already placed the order, you'll have to get a new motherboard (you should be able to return the other without issue).

Here's a good one to consider.

You didn't do bad at all in picking that one otherwise though, for the jump in price it is rated almost two times higher than the one I picked.

Also important to note for AM3+ motherboards is that they do not come with video connectors (do not support on-chip/integrated graphics, a limitation of the AM3+ chip architecture). This means that you MUST have a graphics card installed to use a monitor, and therefore to use the computer. Not a problem, as long as you were planning on getting one.

Sorry for the late response.
