I know how you feel.. Japan was like that too, only that our dorms and classrooms had aircondition :P
Uh.. We went to a lot of places (Akihabara, Shibuya, Asakusa, Mt. Takao, Harajuku (Almost everyday xD) is some of the places) and we went to Tokyo Tower and there was a huge Pókemon-center there!! :O And then we learned calligraphy, Japanese flower arrangement and how to were a yukata =^_^= ++ A lot more
I went on a language traveling school so I actually learned a lot of Japanese too ^__^
I will also watch it a 2nd time as soon as i have spare time :P
It's a beautifull story indeed, and i even came to tears in the last episode :)
I always force myself to watch 50% of the anime, before i decide wether or not i dump it... And if i dump it, i will most likely watch it again sooner. Currently i have SKET dance on on-hold, since the first episodes was too boring, and i could see that it had no storyline :/ (I peeked at episode 20)

There were a lot of people sitting outside of pokemon center and playing Nintendo DS too :P
