I haven't read the manga, so I can't really compare the faithfulness of the movie adaptation. Granted, I love cyberpunk. It's one of my favorite genres visually, and this movie provided some great eye candy. The story was decent; it was a bit predictable and the themes explored were done to death by the likes of Asimov. Still I enjoyed it and felt some of the "Tezuka magic".
You should check out Mushi-shi when you have the chance. Some of the themes Buddha explored are in it. Also, I just finished watching Black Jack 21 which was awesome.
It's amazing. It follow the story of a military obsessed high schooler with no common sense in life. And by common sense, I mean blow up his shoe locker at school to protect himself from terrorists. He has spent no life in the real world, and then all of a sudden he has to go and pose as a high school student in real life in order to follow and monitor Kaname Chidori, in order to protect her from foreign agents. Kaname Chidori is a whispered, which are like technology black boxes. They all knowledge on how to create superior technology even if they don't know about it. The main character, Sagara Sousuke, is a member of the mercenary organization MITHRIL, which does a whole bunch of stuff to protect the good and stuff. So yeah, try it out. It's a very high quality anime.
