I would say that this feel actually complements Houseki no Kuni, as the characters are in a way "objects", which is why the artistic choice of CGI worked for it.

With Beastars... well, you're right about your points of the more traditional 2D style. But if we look at CGI from a point of the production as whole, while 2D could achieve more aesthetically looking result, it would take considerably more effort (and budget I imagine) with the inhuman character designs. So if we suppose the studio has same budget whether they do 2D or 3D, I prefer working 3D over low quality 2D. I'm not saing Beastars has amazing animation, but I would say it has a good one.

There's also stuff like gdgd Fairies, Funny Pets or Popee the Performer where 2D wouldn't really work for the semi-ironic surreal nature.

My point being, even if traditional animation might be better, that doesn't mean CG is by default no good. Just not ideal - but that might still be good, just less.

Personally I'm a big fan of the oldschool cell animation, especially if the anime gets a remastered HD release, that's just beautiful to look at, but yeah, they don't make them like they used to, lol.

That's pretty biased, as if it being from a "game" means something different. It's still an anime CG cutscene with flowing movements of hair, effects, and clothing; circa 2013 to boot.

My point was, CG and anime can look passable and that it's not an automatic fail, like you've already decided. You legit go into everything just automatically assuming the worst, don't you?
