Cool. Well Im not really into mech animes myself, but I've seen Gun X Sword, Code Geass and Gurren Lagann. You could also try one of the Gundam series.

Couldn't help but notice you're looking for mecha anime. I wouldn't say I've seen a lot of mecha anime but The Big O is classic one. IGPX is about mecha racing if you're into that. And Eureka 7 is pretty good too with a lot of mecha fighting scenes. The main character might even remind you of Shinji. I'm not really good at recommending things but I hope I gave you some ideas...
