TheBlockernator AKA: That Mai Valentine Guy

TheBlockernator AKA: That Mai Valentine Guy

Hello! My name is TheBlockernator, but you probably know me more as "That Mai Valentine Guy". :) She's just so pretty.

I'm just a normal anime fan, i love Moe/Slice of life stuff. I also like game genre. I tend to favor shorter anime and very rarely watch something long. My favorite anime is Yugioh, my waifu is Mai Valentine.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Is one of the biggest franchises in my life. It was my childhood obsession, my first major anime and one of the most impactful series of my life. I even have the logo tattooed on my arm.

I'm a huge fan of "Magical Girlfriend" anime like Ah My Goddess and Please Teacher. And Monster Musume.

I grew up with 4kids and Toonami stuff and never really branched out until 2016, when i first saw Azumanga Daioh and Strawberry Marshmallow.

My favorite VA is Megan Hollingshead. She's very talented and i have sort of a crush on her :)

I'm always looking for new friends to discuss anime with, so if you want to chat, just send a friend request. I accept most. But keep in mind, i have social anxiety so starting a conversation is challenging for me. I prefer other people to start the convo. It also causes me to not read messages sometimes so if i'm slow responding, please keep this in mind.

My ratings are based around how much i'd want to rewatch a series once i finish it. I usually add notes to my MAL List next to shows i finished, that's mostly just for me to look at and remember what i liked/disliked if i forget watching it.

I use Watching as more of a What's Next section. Typically, i pick about 4 or 5 shows i'll watch next, finish them, then pick 4 more. I watch 2 shows at a time, 1 of them will be longer (35+ episodes) and the other will be shorter. On Hold is series i've started and never got around to finishing, Plan To Watch is similar, i'll watch later. Dropped isn't really "Dropped" for me, it's the very last thing i'll watch when i clear my PTW/OH lists because they're not very good but i want to finish them.

Oh, you're parents were into games? My parents were not much of gamers, outside of the NES. And yeah Nintendo Power was fun to flip through. It was pretty late into the magazines run where I found it, iirc.

That makes sense. Yeah I remember getting stuck at the third duel, at which point I hadn't figured out the fusions. I never used Pojo, but it was one of those sites I occasionally stumbled onto in google searches.

I hope they do try to hearken back to old style games, but I think they are making a killing off of Master Duel, and with the way the digital card game market is, I feel like orienting themselves as a competitor to hearthstone or other digital card games seems to be what they are prioritizing. I'd love to see an old fashioned Card game RPG once again, though. There are indie games that try to experiment with the card game formula, though, like Inscription, though I have yet to play it.

I can feel that. Especially from a western perspective, 2000s anime was kind of an unexplored frontier. Sure, we'd have imports and localization for some shows, but the internet really gave us free reign to everything we could possibly want.

Yeah, there are more important things in the world than fighting over anime. Although I have been known to indulge in some discussions -when i'm bored mostly. But as for "which anime is better" it doesn't really strike my interest. I'm more interested in the themes and ideas more than anything.

Yeah, canon can be a tricky subject sometimes, especially if not everyone is on the same page. It's hard to say who determines what gets to be canon. Is it the original creator? The adaptation team? The community? I generally err on the side of filler not being "canon", but it could also be argued that it is canon to "this particular version" of the story. Happens in video games, too. MGS is a deeply discussed one.

Yatsura is one of those classics that keeps getting brought up. Those are usually the ones that are worth checking out. Hmm I don't really know how to put it. I feel the dynamic of the characters, and how they spend their time together is important to me. It doesn't even need to be all that exciting, I just like watching the characters get closer over time. I haven't watched too many, but from the ones I've seen, that's what I enjoy from them.

Not too many magazines. I think I have some old Nintendo powers laying around somewhere. I think I may have seen newtype, or some other anime related one in stores, but never really got them.

I feel like most of the games were low budget, so they could never get around to implementing a tutorial. Don't quote me on that though, that's just spitballing. Fusion does kind of operate under the same principle as pre-TCG Yu-Gi-Oh, where "technically" anything can be fused, but we only see a handful of them. A lot of the early games were made around that time (I think Forbidden Memories and maybe Duelist of the Roses), so that could be why the fusions system isn't as concrete.

I agree. I think card game RPGs especially have a lot of potential, that is often underutilized. But it also goes to show the strength of the IP that it can lend itself to other things that are completely unrelated to card games.

Oh yeah, I've watched those channels before. Though it's more just whenever a topic catches my eye. The DuelLogs also has a Magic the Gathering channel, so I'm also pretty familiar with him.

I know right! I've been itching to rewatch Lucky Star. There were a lot of references I missed on the first time, like the Haruhi ones, but I 2000s era anime is such a great vibe. Oh, I actually didn't know that Rangiku was voiced by Mai's actress. My favorites from Bleach are Kisuke and Yoruichi. I knew a lot of people who watched Naruto first (still know a couple), but for some reason me and my friend group at the time was more into Bleach. I remember there were all of these infighting sessions online. I never bothered with any of that.

No I don't think I've seen any magical grilfriend anime. Though, Urusei Yatsura has been on my radar for a while. I'm assuming that counts anyway. I do like romance anime from time to time. Like Mysterious Girlfriend X.

I thought reaction channels died by now. Yeah, I remember when the sweet spot for a video was around 15 minutes in length. Back in the days of JonTron, PBG and all those guys. They still exist for sure, but it seems like there's a lot more videos that are cropping up that are anywhere between 20 seconds and 20 hours lol. It's kind of nuts.

I never had a subscription, but I picked them up every once in a while. I have four volumes above my desk that I still have.

That's so weird. Seeing Celtic Guardian and Lord of D. fuse into Dark Elf just messes with my brain lol. I always wondered why they never properly explained it in game, but seeing this video and this chart, i'd say they didn't bother because it doesn't make any sense lol. Ah well it's pretty interesting either way.

I never got far in Falsebound Kingdom, but I did beat the Sacred Cards. It really feels like a budget title but it's actually pretty fun despite that. I like how it's sort of an RPG. It keeps things interesting. Yeah I don't think I made it past the tutorial in Capsule Monsters. Old YGO games are fascinating, because they always try something new.

Most of my knowledge in modern Yu-Gi-Oh is from Cimo. The only YouTube channel I follow for YGO.

Yeah I've watched about half of GX at this point. I think it's entertaining in it's own right, especially since the dub cranks up the cheese level to dangerous proportions. Yeah, I remember when it first started airing I was a little disappointed that the main cast wasn't involved, but it grew on me. The Cyber Dragons are still one of my favourite archetypes.

I never got into Naruto. Not from lack of trying, either, but at the time, I was more into Bleach, and didn't want to keep up with both shows at the same time.

Yep, I have a box set of Azumanga on DVD. I first watched it in 2013 but never finished it for some reason, so I bought the box set last year and finally ended up finishing it. It's a classic as far as I'm concerned. For me, it was Lucky Star that introduced me to that sort of genre. I found Azu after the fact, while looking for similar shows.

Yeah it's a shame, but the YouTube game has changed dramatically since then. It seems to take a long time for people to come out with abridged episodes, so they tend to fall into obscurity.
DreamWindow Feb 2, 12:50 PM
Oh interesting. The good old days when you had to have a magazine subscription to find all the secrets! Shonen Jump was worth it in general though. Oh, I thought everything had a weakness, that's interesting. It's been a while since I played it now. The thing that I never got a hang of was the fusion mechanic. I couldn't figure anything out unless I looked it up.

Yeah, I had a couple of them. I have the Double Pack for GBA, and I have the Falsebound Kingdom for GameCube. I also downloaded a bunch of ROMs for some of the GBA ones so I'll mess around with those eventually. I still try to pick some up whenever I find one. I couldn't figure out Capsule Monster Colosseum, but I only played it breifly at a friends house, so that could be why.

I really got into Duel Links for a while there, but something happened, and I lost my whole collection. So that kind of killed my enjoyment for it. But I'd love to play some older formats. I know Edison is becoming popular right now. Yeah, the Pendulum layout was pretty bad. It's slightly better now; the Pendulum cards actually take up your S/T zone slots, which is a bit more fair. And yeah I feel you, but in some ways that's kind of how TCGs operate thanks to power creep. If they supported more legacy formats, it would be ideal. I think they were experimenting with that, but I haven't kept up in a while.

Makes sense, I probably wouldn't have gotten into anime if I only had to rely on TV. In those early days when it was just Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon, it didn't bother me, but when I got internet, I was able to really keep up with certain shows. Like Bleach was the first one I ever really got into. It aired on I think it was YTV (Canadian TV channel) but it was much slower than just downloading the episodes online. It's cool that Azumanga Daioh was one of the shows that brought you back into anime. Classic show.

He's still making YGOTAS episodes, although very slowly. It was a fun series but it's pretty much run it's course. The "abridged series" model is sort of dying, especially after TFS stopped.
DreamWindow Feb 2, 7:11 AM
Oh yeah, wetlands, back when field spells were actually just a field, lol. Yeah, old Yu-Gi-Oh art is always really comforting to look at for some reason. I like looking at the bandai art too.

Honestly I respect it. I think we all wanted to be on the show at some point; especially when GX came around, I remember wishing "man why can't my school by focused on card games" lol. Oh I don't remember Moisture Creature being in Duelists of the Roses. I picked that game up a couple of years ago. It's kind of hard, but I think I beat Yugi's campaign.

It's always fun to play with friends. The last time I played Yu-Gi-Oh irl was when my friend picked up a copy of Speed Duels. It's basically just a bunch of preassembled decks of 20 cards. It was really funny, because he was so used to Magic, so he would "untap" his defence position monsters at start of turn, lol.

Oh yeah, that makes sense. Yeah that would have been fierce back in the day. Those old floater cards were insane. I remember one of my friends had Pyramid Turtle, and it can float into a 4000 ATK Endless Decay. Have you ever played Goat format? I played it a bit on Dueling Book, it's pretty fun.

Black garden was a really cool design for a card. Yeah, new Yu-Gi-Oh is kind of crazy. I sort of stopped playing after pendulums were introduced. I just didn't think my opponent going +5 off of my Torrential Tribute seemed very fun. I occasionally dabble in some newer YGO, but not very often.

Oh ok, see I never grew up with Dragon Ball (I watched it many years after the fact) or much other anime as a kid, so I think YGO was the first instance of filler I had come to know. Yeah it was for sure a dick move to make a new arc right before the battle city finals, no doubt about that.

Waking the Dragons genuinely did have some really cool moments, and a lot of memorable cards. The dragons, Leviathan / Seal of Orichalcos stuff was really cool. I stan Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight! lol. Have you seen the abridged version? There's also a lot of funny moments from that one as well.
DreamWindow Feb 1, 10:36 AM
I respect it honestly. I love old crusty vanilla monsters from early Yu-Gi-Oh. There just really cool to me. I was obsessed with Twin Long Rods and Turtle Bird for the longest time. I had never even heard of Moisture Creature, but a built in feather duster is pretty sick. I like that you have some unique favourites. Most people just pick what is the best card, or what is popular.

Oh yeah, the anime was not helpful when it came to understanding the rules of the game, lol. I remember some kid trying to say that Jam Breeding Machine lets you summon Slifer the Sky Dragon, even if you don't have the real card. We always made up our own BS rules as we went along lol. I think I got the Yugi starter deck as well. I can't remember if I had the Kaiba one, but I do remember that every time I got a hold of a Blue-Eyes White Dragon, it would always go missing under "mysterious circumstances".

I've done that before with Magic. If I don't have the token I need, sometimes I'll use Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokemon cards. My friends mostly play Magic these days, so my YGO collection is mostly just for collection purposes. Same with Pokemon. I have a couple of precon decks handy, just in case, but it's not often i get to actually play them.

Insect Beatdown with Black Garden and safe zone? Nice. Black garden is a crazy card. I've always loved Doom Dozer, I pulled one as a kid, and always wanted to find a shell for it, but never had the core to support it. Years later, on Dueling Network, I played one that was kind of a mill variant, with Doom Dozer, and Needle Worm. It wasn't very good, but it was cool.

Even watching it when I was older I was thinking the exact same thing; WHERE'S THE BATTLE CITY FINALS?! It's funny, because my friend was sitting with me in the same room when I was watching it, and he would hear me complain about it, yet I refused to skip it lol. When it was first airing, I never understood the concept of a filler arc, so it was jarring.

Speaking of filler, I remember actually really liking the Waking the Dragons arc when I was a kid. I even got one of those Chaos Duel Disks for Christmas one year.
DreamWindow Feb 1, 3:43 AM
Oooh Parrot Dragon is a unique one. I didn't know about it back then, so I imagine it was pretty hard to find. That was kind of like me with Pokemon cards. I just had the cards, but didn't know it was an actual game. It took me the longest time to actually be able to play Yu-Gi-Oh, and even then, me and my friends would always end up cheating or making our own rules.

I just finished the Weevil Vs. Joey fight in the manga, actually. It's a good one for sure! I like how the only reason Weevil was able to lock Joey down was because he cheated, and yet he ended up losing anyway. Mai vs. Yugi was good too. Her mirror wall was busted in the anime. IIRC that was the first appearance of Black Luster Solider, which is definitely one of the coolest old school monsters, imo.
What kind of insects were you running back then? I never had enough decent ones to build around.

Oh man I never woke up early enough for Saturday morning stuff, so I guess I was lucky. I only could watch it if it aired after school. I didn't watch the whole series as a kid, my memory gets fuzzy after battle city, but I did watch the entire series in 2013.
DreamWindow Jan 28, 6:35 PM
For sure! It was really exciting to be a kid when all of these huge franchises were getting their start. I got into Yu-Gi-Oh pretty much when it was first airing. The first card I remember seeing was Illusionist Faceless Mage (on episode 2) and it was so unique. I immediately asked my mom to pick me up some cards lol!

It's up there for me, too. I've been collecting the manga lately. It's so fascinating to look back on all the changes that were made in the later adaptations. I'm at battle city right now, the duel where Kaiba and Yugi are facing the mask guys. Do you have any personal favourite duels / moments?
DreamWindow Jan 27, 3:11 PM
No problem! I see you post about Yu-Gi-Oh a lot and thought I'd reach out. Sounds like we come from the same generation of people who grew up with the franchise

Nice, glad to hear you enjoyed it. The fanservice is a lot more creative than the average ecchi-comedy, and the jokes - while pretty 'low bar' - actually work. I laughed so much watching it. Rare for an ecchi-comedy to succeed in being funny.
Shmubm Dec 5, 2023 5:32 AM
Nothing wrong with that.

Halloween aside, I noticed you're watching Magical Sempai. What do you think of it so far?
Shmubm Dec 3, 2023 6:53 AM
Sorry I dropped off the face of the earth. Been a weird couple months!

Sounds like Girls Bravo is one I can avoid if the fanservice is nothing special.

Your anime collection sounds impressive. I fell off buying DVDs and Blu-rays for awhile, but I intend to get back into it. I worry a lot about more obscure movies and anime I like being lost forever...

How was your halloween? I ended up not watching much besides a few horror movies.
