Haha. There was even a time when you couldn't have any favorites...

And then the MAL universe came into being and just kept expanding :)
SuperGreenTea Nov 12, 2023 8:31 AM
Haha. It almost sounds like the 'my sister logged into my MAL account and added that without me knowing about it' excuse.
Good one!

Seriously though, I was pleased to see Sugar Apple in there because it was a genuinely good series (for a fairy fantasy/romantic drama) and Anne was a lovable protagonist. Season 2 expands the plot and some new characters and situations are introduced, but the engrossing and believable dialogue, and elegance and charm, doesn't drop off at any point. I was captivated by the art style and color palette for the full duration. It really was magical and glistened and glimmered with resplendent beauty - just like the silver sugar confections. It had some darkness and sorrow to it, as well as some menacing antagonists (like Jonas from season 1), but ultimately it led me to a happy and relaxed state of mind.

Don't worry, I've had even later replies than this, and seeing Sugar Apple Fairy Tale in your top 10 helps sweeten my mood :)

Happy Birthday!

I've been watching a few things subbed recently and can definitely understand why some people would prefer this. I never know what my reaction will be until I actually see/hear/read at least one episode, and can only judge things on their individual merits through first-hand experience. Hopefully, viewing through this medium will open me up to a whole new range of experiences.

Happy Birthday, Severen!

Ewww, you're one of those 100% subbed 'weeb' freaks. Stay away from me or I'm calling the police lol. You should be put on the special, deviants and misfits, register, for life ;)

I've been rewatching HxH and I have to say I prefer it dubbed to subbed, and I've noticed (after you mentioning it) that the English words are synced impeccably well throughout the entire series, and are an exact fit for the character mouth movements. I also set up the same episode I was watching with the subbed version and compared it with the dub version, line for line. Nothing was omitted from the dub. They just added a few extra words to make complete, well-rounded sentences, because the sub was sometimes grammatically incorrect. You might say that this is how it's directly translated from Japanese, but how can you or I know that if we are not 100% fluent in Japanese ourselves? You might even say this is because of the grammatical idiosyncrasies and nuances of the Japanese original, but perhaps the translator is just not 100% proficient in English and their English grammar is not completely watertight. You've just got to take whatever is doled out on the screen in good faith. You can't see what diplomas, qualifications, certifications, or training, the translator has had. I think the acting and performances were better in English and if I wasn't allowed to watch it dubbed (lol) then I doubt if HxH would even still be in my top 10. That's how much an excellent dub means to me. Reading all the character parts in my own monotone reading voice kinda kills the fun for me. I respect your opinions though, and of course, everyone is free to enjoy anime in whatever way or language that suits them best. I recently participated in this forum's thread about anime series where users prefer the dub to the sub. Have a look at it, you might find it interesting: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1849102&show=0#post8

As I just said, I respect other people's opinions to like and prefer subs, and to watch them 100% of the time, even. I'm glad you enjoyed Beck (however you watched it) because it's a fantastic, guitar music, and coming of age, comedy/drama series.

I believe an anime called .hack//sign did the whole trapped inside of a video game thing FIRST, but its mean score on MAL is even lower than SAO lol. I've not seen it myself but I doubt if the production values are comparable to SAO's visuals, character designs, OST, and dubbed voice cast (lol). I think SAO was the first big-budget, popular anime, set in that virtual reality, MMO game-type environment. It's true that Log Horizon game afterward, but as you said, it gave the viewer a more authentic, multifaced, and detailed experience of being fully immersed inside a gaming 'reality'. It's a shame that you left those last four episodes from SAO 2 dangling. It was quite a bittersweet and emotionally dramatic ending, but I think it was handled quite well, for what is essentially a cartoon series. The second part of War of Underworld has finally rolled around. Are you in any way interested in it? What are your thoughts on the whole Alicization arc?

I'm quite a big AOT fan myself and I've seen all the seasons twice and the 3 OVA's twice. I'm planning to rewatch Birth of Levi and The Lost Girls soon. 3 or 4 times is a good amount for a hardcore fan. There's another guy I'm friends with on MAL who's a massive fan and says he's rewatched all the AOT's many times. I'm just waiting for his reply back, to see how many times he's seen 'em all. I'll let you know how you compare. The battle of the fan Titans! I remember reading a non-MAL thread about whether a new Log Horizon season was in the pipeline or not (like a year ago), and an Indian guy said it was his fave show and he's seen it 13 times lol. There's someone I'm friends with on here who's seen Bleach like 16 times or something. Wowza, that's as hardcore as it gets. Is AOT the anime you've seen the most? I've watched 30ish of my fave anime twice, but Avatar: The Last Airbender is the only animated series I've seen all the way through 3 times. I've watched all my other fave US anime-style series twice, except for RWBY - which I'm planning on doing in the near future.

No, I've not seen the Ancient Magus Bride, yet. I watched the first 3 episodes and found it a bit slow, and just couldn't get into it. Maybe I should try to give it some more time to make an impression.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Loli lol. I loved the first half where it was more focused on world-building but once Millim came into it and it went all Loli overload, my interest kinda dissipated.

Have a good birthday and hit me up if you want to reply to this message, or if ever want to chat about anything in the future :)

PS, I just noticed that our mean scores are VERY close lol.

Hey, it's nice to hear from you. You're like the good taste MAN ;)

I wasn't too sure how rock music shenanigans would turn out in anime form, and I remember being a little wary of it initially, but when I was able to stream for the first time a few years ago I just thought I'd give the first episode a shot - and that was it, I was hooked from there until the end! I'd like to rewatch it soon-ish, as it's amazing how much you forget as time goes by.

I don't see many Log Horizon fans around these parts so it was a nice surprise bumping into someone who gave it a 10 - the same as me. How do you feel about the 3rd season that's scheduled for October? AOT, Log Horizon, and Promised Neverland (although this has been delayed 3 months), all at once - it's like a super-ultimate, limited edition, Christmas, that's coming early lol.

PS, Did you watch Beck subbed or dubbed? I watched it dubbed lol.

Thanks for the friend request. It's nice to have someone likeminded in my inner circle :)

Maho as a fave as well - a nice coincidence. I have the DVD for Beck and I'm kinda itching for a rewatch of it sometime soon because I remember it being totally awesome the first time around. That ED with the montage of all the rock greats was cool because I grew up on a lot of those kinda artists and the tune was a classic fuzzy indie rock rabble-rouser. I think the singer/songwriter was Mark Gardner from the English band Ride. It really set the mood. Plus the little skits at the very end of each episode with the Ozzy soundalike guy who would later 'narrate' the Dying Breed tour documentary thingy - those were hilarious!

Hey, you've got good taste and I like your scoring! Things like Beck, Hinamatsuri, Log Horizon, High Score Girl, Ghost in the Shell, AOT, Naruto Shippuden, HxH (2011), and the first SAO a 10 - Bravo! Would you mind if I sent you a friend request? It's quite rare that I see a lot of love for the first 5 series I just mentioned. Seeing your list has really cheered me up :)
