Frankly, I wouldn't mind it being and over the top action show, I had it in my ptw already for a reason (honestly, I wish something like demon slayer was just over the top edgy action, maybe then I would actually enjoy the show as much as most other people).... but what you describe does definitely sound more interesting.
I might give it a watch on the sooner rather than later side.

Season 1 has been... honestly a bit weaker than I expected. Like it's not bad... but everything about it seems fairly generic. I'm still waiting for something to truly hook me. I've heard it only gets better as it goes though. even s1 has been slowly but surely getting more interesting.
There's something about it that reminded me a little bit of 'Mars Red', so I had to think of you. I checked and it's on your PTW already. So just throwing it in there, that there are some aspects about it you might really enjoy!

Recently I watched Hilda, and honestly, I think it's going to be some time before I get THAT invested in a show. It was really good, definitely would recommend it to be pretty much anyone. As far as cartoons go, I think it was on a similar level as gravity falls!!

Right, but there are countless examples in the series in which they are struggling with the sunlight while being on foot and if they could have found a solution for that (which looks doable) they would probably also have come up with a better strategy for the batsuit than sticking his head in a pressure cooker.

I think it doesn't, because it shows them freely communicating in between other vampires in the entertainment district and noone hearing them and then later in the end suddenly the footfok vampires notice them by their communication.
I don't remember the second scene you're talking about, but it doesn't really matter in this case cause, weren't the vampires in the redlight district completely mad? they acted pretty much like zombies, I don't think they could really listen to "anything".
unless the vampires in the second scene you're talking about were like that too, in which case it might be another problem with the power, which to be fair, was an element that I didn't really pay much attention too.

What I'm saying is that the show tries to portray her as this exceptional and famous actress, well renowned and Defrott also talking on high notes about her - while she actually didn't even have time to build up such a reputation in the given time-frame. If you're watching the first season, you wouldn't think they're talking about a person who stepped out of the train with no acting experience a few months ago.
if you remember right, she did only have a few performances. but in one of the first ones, Aoi was there to write a report, and while she was a bit hesitant at first, she was extremely impressed by the end.
we don't exactly know how many performances she took after that, but the assumption is that her work got pretty well recognized before she died. and the way of her death probably added to her popularity.
it's not absurd to think she was pretty well known, at least in that area.
Also the record thing is ultra sus. The authors of the show seem to have a wrong idea how record players used to work. This becomes more obvious later, when Maeda apparently recorded himself with the same record player that plays records (it doesn't work like this) on the very same record that already had a recording (it double doesn't work like this). In reality, it was a rare thing to be recorded back then, only few important people got recorded and you needed different equipment and a recording studio.
I mean Rufus did that by changing his voice, and we never saw how recorded it, we just saw the player. the show never showed him record on the same thing, so you're kinda just assuming the author thought it was recorded on the same thing.
He wasn't useless, but they built up some kind of expectation that all his knowledge-gathering would actually be put to use at some point.
I would argue that the bat suit was exactly that.
without it, they would never be able to save Aoi. even if he could run there without worrying about the sun.

I am, but I try to stay away from it if I know a person is really passionate about a show. I also try to not mind any criticism, but sometimes it can get to me. For example in the forum discussion about scores a person was sharing some relatively elistis opinion and out of curiosity I clicked at their list and saw they gave Chainsaw Man and Steins;Gate a 1. And that's the moment where I'm thinking they just give it a low score to be snobbish on purpose, because even if you think the shows have weaknesses (which they both have) a score of 1 is pretty much outrageous.
yeah, I would just ignore those people. there is a line with being critical that you can't cross without looking stupid. like giving CSM or sg a lower score is 1 thing, but a 1/10 is just there to piss people off.
So the first thing I really dislike is how they made it an ultra difficult rocket-science type of thing to escape sunlight, while at the same time they're absolutely fine in indirect sunlight. If that's all the case, a simple umbrella would do the trick.

The selective kind of ultrasound-communication: yes, connection to bats, that makes sense, I even like it when a show comes up with some themed special for their vampires instead of just making them slightly stronger humans with long teeth that are slightly more difficult to kill. But the problem is that it always just works the way the plot happens to need it. Sometimes it looks like a very simple and basic thing, but Yamada screws it up the moment when the plot needs him to fail. The selectiveness - vampires around them for some reason can't overhear their communication but people half a kilometer away can - it makes no sense, ears are no radio receivers that listen to a certain frequency only. And then, near the end, the vampires around can hear them anyway. Yeah, okay... so that entire idea is really botched.

Noone gets the girl except the one who... shouldn't have one? I mean. What's going on? Did we ever get a single kind of foreshadowing or little sign that Suwa cares about this girl? That's after the show giving him a low-key romantic scene with a geisha that he apparently didn't feel guilty about the slightest. Just.. odd, nothing else. People are like that, but does the show need this scene?

Suwa, earlier in the series first opened up to that one prostitute girl. I'll try to keep this short, but I do have to go into some detail.
Suwa is the oldest vampire in the unit, he has lived for hundreds of years and is kind of tired of living. but he sees the joy in the young prostitute, it's obvious that there is something that he likes or admires about her. so much so that after seeing her dead body, he takes off his mask and asks if Takeuchi knows a song he can teach him.
it's obvious it impacted him, but it's not fully obvious why.
the relation between suwa and the traitor girl is a bit more complicated. It doesn't start as something romantic. it barely ends at that. Suwa looks at her as an ignorant child, who doesn't know any better, he is kind of looking out for her. and the final scene between them, is a result of just that. if you look at their interactions with context, it's pretty obvious that suwa was looking out for her from the start.
it's almost like he sees the most naive part of himself in her. the part of him that we saw shine when he was talking to the prostitute.
it also has thematic connection to the Aoi and defrott scene, where she tells him only a child would say the want to die.
I don't wanna give you a headache, but that's the gist of it.
Kurusu could have had a happy end right there, but for some reason they found it necessary to add some extra drama to make her state something that looks like he's going to disappear entirely now. For no good reason either, because he could have totally disposed of the remaining army and be back for lunch. But I guess he now has to go and watch over Gotham City or something.
I wouldn't say kurisu didn't get a happy ending. the phrasing was that he still needed to do something before being able to come back. But I think it was meant to be a hopeful note. where there is things to do, but he will strive to stay alive and come back for her.
but I see what you're saying. it's just hard thing to know since it's mostly open ended. I just give the show the benefit of the doubt and believe it when it says "there is more work to do".
But I also know I do that because I already like everything else, so I can't really say I'm not biased to say this.
And there is this one thing about the character design. As much as I applauded the fact that they made the suspect battle shonen protagonist looking guy not the mc (the show Pet fails majorly at this, for bringing a really varied looking cast, but add one single generic looking brownhaired shonen protagonist guy who turns - plot twist into the mc near the end) both Maeda and Kurusu as well as Misaki and Shirase just look too similar. This is especially bad, because it's really confusing in episode 4 with the flashbacks and Misaki having long hair and a red bow in it as well, you really need to pay attention who is who now. It would have helped if the show would at least make the characters say the names occasionally, but this show isn't big into that.
I mean... yeah the character designs aren't really anything I would call special.
but.... ok, the thing is, maybe It's a me thing. but I don't think maeda and kurisu look similar at all. and Aoi and misaki looking alike was an important part of the plot. it was on purpose. It was foreshadowed back in episode 1, and in the finale was the thing that brought maeda back to himself.
How huge of a well-known and celebrated actress is Misaki really if she gets flattened after what feels two performances - and it can't have been this much more because we know the timeframe.
It also doesn't explain how Defrott is talking and thinking about Misaki in the beginning, because they didn't have THAT much time together after all and it was mostly him teaching her a little bit.

the show never says her death was not accidental, but it is implied that It may have been set up because she overheard Rufus and Nakajima.
And defrott didn't really talk about misaki that much in the begining. he just had a conversation with Maeda about her, when Maeda was investigating the scene.
but besides that, while it was short, it's clearly the most important person he had met in a long time in the way it affected him. as far as we know, she was the only person Defrott got somewhat close to at the time. this also explains why he warmed up to Aoi fairly fast. since Aoi and Misaki do look very similar.
What is Takeuchi even good for? Why is he in the series at all? He isn't even a comic relief character. With his skill and knowledge you would have expected him to come into play at some point in the solution apart from just making a batman suit (who wouldn't have been needed if anyone had thought of bringing an umbrella).
He planned the Escape at the end, he made the bat suit, which again was mainly for flying, which isn't something that an umbrella can do. he made the cream that protects them from the sun for a short while. he made the blood candy. he broke up suwa and kurusu when they were fighting and brought them up to speed.
he was definitely the least developed character in the main team, but he wasn't "useless". he just didn't get a real character arc unlike everyone else.
You mentioned the lack in explaining the main villain's motivation yourself. He has a dream of... utopia I guess... which requires the death of a lot of people or something. Vampires' rights activism? Something like that.
god complex, control freak, power hungry...
he's a pretty generic villain. to me what makes him work is his downfall and how fast his empire falls apart. the fact that his rise to top and fall to the bottom is in a single episode called king of fools, and his death is by literally falling also goes a long way on selling that.
Can Vampires mind control other vampires now or what is it? I mean... considering how Defrott disposes of Rufus on the ship, this retroactively makes the scene with him and Shirase trapped in that sewer thing even more annoying. It's already bad by how the show is inconsistent with the time of day and the sun's position in here and his big drama baiting even though he could have easily escaped and the girl just walk to the exit, but if only he could have remembered that he can mind-control Rufus right there!
it was an illusion, not mind control, and the show never really says how it works. the assumption is that Defrott, being the only S class vampire has tricks that we hadn't seen before.
in the scene were defrott and Aoi were trapped, Rufus was nowhere near them, he was talking to them through a microphone. We don't know what is the range on that ability, nor how it works.... which to be honest, I do think is kind of a problem. it does kind of come out of nowhere even though it doesn't really break the rules.

I don't think the show is perfect either. The animation is very lacking and the show's visuals is fully carried by style and directing, and while I think he works well enough, I'm also not a huge fan of the villain. He's motives are too basic. it feels like his side of things would benefit greatly by the show being a bit longer.

the manga, is basically the dumbed down version of the anime, well that's a lie there are a lot of other differences, but it doesn't have the "thing" that made me like the anime so much. the play like writing and story structure is just not there.
I just realized that the show has a 6.59 on MAL and that feels too low to be honest. Maybe they should have written in the synopsis 'This is not actually about space flight, but vampires instead'

It wasn't until I rewatched a few months ago that I increased it's score from a low 8 to high 9. It's just such a well put together show.
the biggest sign that a show is well made and has a lot of care put into it, is when the more you look, the more good things you have to say about it. most anime just show their flaws when you look deeper into them, even some great shows are like that.
there are very few shows that get better and better the more you look into them.

I did however listen to a part of the 'Made in Abyss' soundtrack. It's really beautiful and I'm sure it fits well with the type of show. Generally I'm not a person who listens to soundtracks in their playlist, so I will probably not go back to it.
In that case, I'll just say, listen to these 4 tracks from the later parts:
that's fair, I still wouldn't consider it a greatly written mystery or anything, but with that context it would be "better" hard to say how better, but it would be at least a little better.
I don't really mind discussing shows, but it's pretty clear that 'Higurashi' or 'Made in Abyss' are two shows that mean a lot to one of us and I really hated 'Made in Abyss' for something I know for a fact won't get better, only worse.
fair enough, but 2 fast things:
1. I still suggest you to at the very least listen to the abyss s2 and movie soundtrack.
2. when you finished it tell me how worth it the higurashi remake (or sequels?) are. one of my big problems with the original was the animation being kinda subpar, so I was excited to watch the new one. but after seeing how much hate it got, I didn't really bother with it.
I think 'Another' or 'Hell's Paradise' would be better shows to discuss, because we both don't rank them top tier, yet they're both kind of relevant to the type of shows we watch. 'Another' does a better job setting up a creepy atmosphere and has a better way of handling the mystery than 'Hell's Paradise' in my opinion. Misaki Mei being creepy is a red herring and it's played well, because she's creepy for a reason and the way they portray it is well done from the first scene up to the point where you realize what's really going on with her. About the mystery here: the show sticks to the rules it set up relatively well and the characters are actually focussed on trying to solve the mystery as good as they can despite their memory loss. They manage to solve it in the end, but not fast enough to prevent most of the deaths.
I wonder what disappointed you about the 'Another' mystery.
I can talk about hell's paradise, but another was meh enough that I have mostly forgotten what it was even about.
here's what I remember about another:
the build up to the mystery really dragged on.
the umbrella death was the only one I actually found a little disturbing, the rest were goofy, but at least in an entertaining way. most of it was just stalling for the reveals.
the final culprit was a character that barely existed in the show and barely had any screen time, so I ended up just thinking.... oh her? ok.... I guess.
I can't really go into small details, since my gage is based on my limited memory, but that's what I remember thinking about the show.
you are probably right about it setting a better atmosphere and mystery than hells paradise, but it's not really a fair comparison. Another is a full on horror mystery. hell's paradise is a battle shounen set in a unique world. horror is not exactly it's primary point. I wouldn't even call it atmospheric.
not that having these wouldn't make hell's paradise better, but they aren't the main point of the show, so I'm not going go hard on it for being lacking in those areas. what I enjoyed about hell's paradise is these:
the background art is breath takingly good
the show is good at creating a convincing sense of danger by making the characters get hurt in meaningful ways and not being afraid to kill characters, which is very important for a show like it to work
the world and it's rules has some super interesting concepts that I haven't seen done like this before
every episode feels important, and very little time is wasted
the music slaps
now.... the writing is not the best. and the animation does have it's short comings from time to time, but for the most part, I think it achieves what it sets out to do. it's not that I think hells' paradise is a better horror mystery than another.
I just think another is an average horror mystery, while hell's paradise is a pretty good edgy battle shounen.
I can say that I watched the show twice and the first time there was also a really important bit of information not really explained well enough to understand and that made the reveal disappointing for me - but it's a flaw of the localization. The second time I watched a fansub which explained it just right.
you might be right, but above all else, I just found the show boring despite it being a mystery. it just hanged 1 mystery around my head for 12 episodes, and gave 1 answer for it.
it felt like a story that could have been wrapped up in a 1 and half hour long movie, without having pacing issues. even if you are right, and the answer is more satisfying with fansubs, I just don't think it can help it much. the disappointing final reveal, was just the icing on the cake. even without it I wouldn't give another a score higher than a 6.

you have yet to see most of the things I consider to be the peak of mystery writing in anime. the most surprising being the fact that you somehow have not seen madoka magica rebellion, despite watching the original and giving it a 10/10. I'm actually super curious on why that is.
rebellion has the fanbase al little mixed for a particular reason, but even that aspect is just as loved as it is hated. and you can't really know which camp you're in without watching it.

I wouldn't say kurisu didn't get a happy ending. the phrasing was that he still needed to do something before being able to come back. But I think it was meant to be a hopeful note. where there is things to do, but he will strive to stay alive and come back for her.
but I see what you're saying. it's just hard thing to know since it's mostly open ended. I just give the show the benefit of the doubt and believe it when it says "there is more work to do".
But I also know I do that because I already like everything else, so I can't really say I'm not biased to say this.
I mean... yeah the character designs aren't really anything I would call special.
but.... ok, the thing is, maybe It's a me thing. but I don't think maeda and kurisu look similar at all. and Aoi and misaki looking alike was an important part of the plot. it was on purpose. It was foreshadowed back in episode 1, and in the finale was the thing that brought maeda back to himself.
It also doesn't explain how Defrott is talking and thinking about Misaki in the beginning, because they didn't have THAT much time together after all and it was mostly him teaching her a little bit.

the show never says her death was not accidental, but it is implied that It may have been set up because she overheard Rufus and Nakajima.
And defrott didn't really talk about misaki that much in the begining. he just had a conversation with Maeda about her, when Maeda was investigating the scene.
but besides that, while it was short, it's clearly the most important person he had met in a long time in the way it affected him. as far as we know, she was the only person Defrott got somewhat close to at the time. this also explains why he warmed up to Aoi fairly fast. since Aoi and Misaki do look very similar.
He planned the Escape at the end, he made the bat suit, which again was mainly for flying, which isn't something that an umbrella can do. he made the cream that protects them from the sun for a short while. he made the blood candy. he broke up suwa and kurusu when they were fighting and brought them up to speed.
he was definitely the least developed character in the main team, but he wasn't "useless". he just didn't get a real character arc unlike everyone else.

he's a pretty generic villain. to me what makes him work is his downfall and how fast his empire falls apart. the fact that his rise to top and fall to the bottom is in a single episode called king of fools, and his death is by literally falling also goes a long way on selling that.
it was an illusion, not mind control, and the show never really says how it works. the assumption is that Defrott, being the only S class vampire has tricks that we hadn't seen before.
in the scene were defrott and Aoi were trapped, Rufus was nowhere near them, he was talking to them through a microphone. We don't know what is the range on that ability, nor how it works.... which to be honest, I do think is kind of a problem. it does kind of come out of nowhere even though it doesn't really break the rules.

I don't think the show is perfect either. The animation is very lacking and the show's visuals is fully carried by style and directing, and while I think he works well enough, I'm also not a huge fan of the villain. He's motives are too basic. it feels like his side of things would benefit greatly by the show being a bit longer.
Now i'm wondering if the suit was inspired by batman, or both the suit and batman were inspired by bats..... eh potato potato same thing lol
I see what you're saying, but while I have definitely heard this song many times, I haven't heard it enough times to just know all of it my memory, so I wasn't really bothered by them not including the best part.
I mean the song does match the scene, but I also see why it would be annoying if you're waiting for it.

I personally don't think that he would. he's the type of guy who would spend the rest of his life trying his best to atone for his mistakes. I have read half the manga, maybe I can give a 100% answer when I finish it.

the manga, is basically the dumbed down version of the anime, well that's a lie there are a lot of other differences, but it doesn't have the "thing" that made me like the anime so much. the play like writing and story structure is just not there.
lol, I'm not sure if you even can sell the average person on mars red. but I am betting it all that every theatre kid will love the shit out of it. the trailer for this show kinda sucks ass, I might make a trailer for it myself just for the sake of selling the show properly when I suggest it to people.

and believe it or not for me it was an 8 too for a very long time. a low 8 at that.
It wasn't until I rewatched a few months ago that I increased it's score from a low 8 to high 9. It's just such a well put together show.
the biggest sign that a show is well made and has a lot of care put into it, is when the more you look, the more good things you have to say about it. most anime just show their flaws when you look deeper into them, even some great shows are like that.
there are very few shows that get better and better the more you look into them.

that's fair, I still wouldn't consider it a greatly written mystery or anything, but with that context it would be "better" hard to say how better, but it would be at least a little better.

fair enough, but 2 fast things:
1. I still suggest you to at the very least listen to the abyss s2 and movie soundtrack.
2. when you finished it tell me how worth it the higurashi remake (or sequels?) are. one of my big problems with the original was the animation being kinda subpar, so I was excited to watch the new one. but after seeing how much hate it got, I didn't really bother with it.
I wonder what disappointed you about the 'Another' mystery.
I can talk about hell's paradise, but another was meh enough that I have mostly forgotten what it was even about.
here's what I remember about another:
the build up to the mystery really dragged on.
the umbrella death was the only one I actually found a little disturbing, the rest were goofy, but at least in an entertaining way. most of it was just stalling for the reveals.
the final culprit was a character that barely existed in the show and barely had any screen time, so I ended up just thinking.... oh her? ok.... I guess.
I can't really go into small details, since my gage is based on my limited memory, but that's what I remember thinking about the show.
you are probably right about it setting a better atmosphere and mystery than hells paradise, but it's not really a fair comparison. Another is a full on horror mystery. hell's paradise is a battle shounen set in a unique world. horror is not exactly it's primary point. I wouldn't even call it atmospheric.
not that having these wouldn't make hell's paradise better, but they aren't the main point of the show, so I'm not going go hard on it for being lacking in those areas. what I enjoyed about hell's paradise is these:
the background art is breath takingly good
the show is good at creating a convincing sense of danger by making the characters get hurt in meaningful ways and not being afraid to kill characters, which is very important for a show like it to work
the world and it's rules has some super interesting concepts that I haven't seen done like this before
every episode feels important, and very little time is wasted
the music slaps
now.... the writing is not the best. and the animation does have it's short comings from time to time, but for the most part, I think it achieves what it sets out to do. it's not that I think hells' paradise is a better horror mystery than another.
I just think another is an average horror mystery, while hell's paradise is a pretty good edgy battle shounen.
you might be right, but above all else, I just found the show boring despite it being a mystery. it just hanged 1 mystery around my head for 12 episodes, and gave 1 answer for it.
it felt like a story that could have been wrapped up in a 1 and half hour long movie, without having pacing issues. even if you are right, and the answer is more satisfying with fansubs, I just don't think it can help it much. the disappointing final reveal, was just the icing on the cake. even without it I wouldn't give another a score higher than a 6.

you have yet to see most of the things I consider to be the peak of mystery writing in anime. the most surprising being the fact that you somehow have not seen madoka magica rebellion, despite watching the original and giving it a 10/10. I'm actually super curious on why that is.
rebellion has the fanbase al little mixed for a particular reason, but even that aspect is just as loved as it is hated. and you can't really know which camp you're in without watching it.
more the tension building and mini jump scares thing.
