To be honest I find the majority of female representation to be rather juvenile, but understandable given both industry's focus on the predominantly teenage male audience. I've seen any number of "top ten female anime characters" and the majority of them aren't very good as the common assumption is that a well-developed female character is little more than a male character with breasts.
It's a rather sad situation that probably the greatest female character in anime is largely unknown by the majority of people in the community, and instead female and male characters from popular shows are often given top billing even though they might be superficial and mainly there for fanservice.
The strange thing is that people are a lot more tolerant of manga here in the UK than they are of anime - especially when it comes to nudity, violence, gore, etc. It's mainly because comic-books have covered so many things and even the most something like Berserk is considered relatively normal in comparison to some Western titles.
Some titles do get "cut" in certain ways, but for the most part it seems as though the releases are pretty much what one would find in the US.
