I think that there's a lot of "little girl wanders around and something bad happens" for too many episodes without the slightest of hints until the last couple of episodes. That plus the poor pacing of villain exposition in the second arc really detracted from my experience of the show overall. Felt like there was nothing accomplished for a long while (plot-wise, aside from virus busting). It's my biggest gripe.

I liked Yui and Ai as characters the most, the rest of the cast is nice (and I agree, War Wolf and Freeze do have a lot going on), but I think everyone else is overall less my cup of tea.

Regarding the complexity of the story itself, I still find it fairly straightforward in comparison to other magical girl shows. I have not seen Sailor Moon and only bits and pieces of Cardcaptor Sakura, but shows that come to mind that I have seen are Ojamajo Doremi, Flip Flappers, and Mahou Shoujo Tai Arusu (which I think the latter two have something a lot more complex going on). However, these arguably start to fall out the boundaries of traditionally defined magical girl shows.

The rating is hard to talk about in many contexts, people use it differently, people interpret it differently. It's fine that I don't agree with your rating(s), but what you say is totally reasonable, and I would have probably rated it higher had more of the cast appealed to me and the second arc presented itself more smoothly. I have the show at a 6 (at the time of writing), (but one would have to go interpret how I do my ratings) but it could be 7 on a good day.

I felt that the second arc does not build up nicely. Seemed like there was a lot of filler (at least 10+ episodes) with just the slightest hint of plot relevance sprinkled throughout. Dumping a lot of info in the final episode when there were 26 in total to work with leads me to believe things could have been done differently.

The plot isn't also really all that much more complex; I found it to be pretty linear, at most, subplots diverging once or twice, since it's aimed at a younger audience and is episodic.

I don't really think it's getting a "exceeds expectations in all categories" (translating to a 10 in your review's case). I liked the art/visual style, can't go wrong with the 90s style, the music is suitable with a few great tracks in the soundtrack but the rest doesn't stand out as much for myself, and the cast of characters is alright (after Yui, Ai [the human] comes in close for favourites, then everyone else far lower on the totem pole). I think the delivery of the second arc is its weakest point.

Corrector Yui was on my radar for a while, but just that. Reading your review to about as far as the part where it says it has more in common with Mega Man Battle Network and .hack//Sign instantly convinced me to go through the series. Now that I've finished the show, while I don't agree with a fair amount of the review (and the rating too), I am still glad to have watched it. Corrector Yui feels like a lost cultural icon that silently sits in the minds of 30-something year old Japanese viewers (as of 2023). I'm happy to have shared the viewing experience with others now.

Awesome review of Corrector Yui! I gotta admit I had put it down for a while after the first couple of eps, but you've convinced me to start it back up.

Thanks. ^^ I'm just waiting for the day it has enough likes to be on the page by default, hehe.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
