I've always been a little at odds with rating systems... At best, now I can look back and judge a certain show by which other shows I've given the same rating.
But I try to take other things into account as well. Mainly, the show's intended audience and what they were trying to accomplish. (So, a kids' show and an anime aimed at adults may have the same rating, but chances are I judged them based on very different things. And a sequel is being judged more against the other seasons in that series than against all anime in general.) And I can say that I definitely tend to weigh things like story and character development much higher than technical things like animation. Those are just the elements that are most important to me.
Current Projects:
Manga:
The Ouran manga is finally in progress! And I did end up collecting an entire series at the convention last month... But I'm not sure what I'm going to follow Ouran with. I've actually got quite a few series collected now, and I'm not ready to lock myself into my next one just yet.
On the anime side of things...
I'm in that stage with Hanasaku Iroha where I'm reserving judgment... I think the first few episodes get off to a pretty good start. It's doing some things well, and other elements aren't quite hitting their marks... But it's too early to say anything definitive about it.
On the longer-running series side of things... It's happened. I've officially begun One Piece. I'm closing in on episode 450, in the middle of a really fun arc. I know I'm nearing some of the big stuff, so that's giving me an extra push.
I've just finished Dragon Ball GT and Pokemon Journeys, and there's only Yugioh 5Ds left on my list of long-running shows that I was close to finishing or a while... I'm probably going to cut back on the number of those I'm watching at one time. Between making more of an effort to play some of the games/read some of the books that have been sitting on my shelf forever and picking up a second job... I just don't have the time to keep track of 6 different shows at once.
But I'm going to be following up my Pokemon journey with Sonic X, a show I have fond memories of from my childhood but never actually saw all the way through. And I do plan to continue on with Yugioh, at least through Zexal, which I've heard some pretty good things about.

I just want to say one thing really quick that's been bugging me ever since I took a better look at the cover... That famous image of the little girl standing in the rain next to the giant Totoro... is inaccurate.
How the fuck have I never realized that before?
