Report BlackMagic's Profile

After many years of watching anime, I've discovered the key to enjoying it is something very simple: Lowered Expectations. Most anime are telling stories or showing characters that are very familiar. Sometimes, I get fed up with that, but other times it's interesting to see different takes on the same origin story.

Favorite Types of Anime:Ones that are character-driven, but also with a legit plot rather than just slice of life. Bonus points if there is a psychological aspect to it...whether it is exploring how people adjust to future technology (Psycho-Pass), how individuals mentally compete with each other in tactics (Death Note), or how they get caught up in grand-scale strategy (Legend of the Galactic Heroes).

I was 16 or so when I saw Vampire Hunter D. I was hooked and immediately set out to watch all the anime I could find. Most of the anime available at rental stores at the time were put out by Manga Entertainment and known for their ultra-violence and excessive profanity. I guess I look at cursing and gory violence with rose-tinted glasses because of this. I also finally got around to watching DBZ during one of its complete reruns on Toonami. After getting quality internet and discovering fansubs, my list of anime grew to the numbers you see today...though I still have a soft spot for those great 90's OVAs. Even the bad ones are enjoyable in a nostalgic sort of way.

Dude, there is some serious negativity against old anime, OVAs in particular, from the 80s and 90s. I wonder what's up with that? The three "most helpful" reviews on "Tokyo Revelation" are all negative and are all incredibly inept.

Yea, guy sets off to conquer a tribe, but is saved by them and gets enamoured by their culture, so he changes sides. Betrayal is portrayed as a virtue for some reason. I guess you should fight your own people if you disagree with them. Nobody questions the main character's motives in these films.

I still haven't seen Dances with wolves, I have to check it out, even though I've seen the story several times already. Maybe it's told better.

Education has been a huge problem for every state since towards the end of the Cold War. In many respects, people before the Internet were more savvy to the media they consumed, because it required more from them. I'm not sure how this cultural shift occured that media became more "stupid" or "accessible".

There's also a problem Miyazaki mentioned that, in regards to anime, the industry isn't filled with people who want to animate, it's filled with fans of fans, who can't even iterate well on established formulas. In films that's especially evident in America, where the most they do is just make copies of classic films but change the sex or race of a character.

I share your sentiments, although I'd say that audiences have only become dumber to narratives and plot mechanics and character motivations. Really, it seems like most people can't understand when a story is insinuating something. It has to be blatantly obvious. Since most people don't read religious texts now or fairy tales, or classical literature, they don't even have the means to understand the language of stories. Ironically, what was meant to be spoon-fed for kids in order to understand this type of media, has become the de facto standard. And I feel like all the anime of the 2010s I've seen never have a character stop talking. It pisses me off.

I love 80s and 90s OVAs, I need to watch more of them. I don't understand why so many people dislike and downvote them when they're so awesome!

Seems like you've greatly enjoyed Yoma. I especially love the counting song.

I would suggest checking out Monster as from the look of your profile it seems you haven't watched it yet. I am currently about 60 percent done with it and It is extremely different from most of the shows on this medium. It breaks through some of the same stories that judging from your profile seem to repeatedly show up in anime. It is similar to Death Note, but has a more realistic approach to the cat and mouse chase/revenge story. I think you'll really like this series whether it be the manga or the anime adaptation.

people in japan call people oniichan and onnechan outside blood relations because thats how you refer to those who are older than you when you are a child.

Thanks for the birthday wishes! Yes, I still stop by every now and then... MAL will always be my favorite site for anything anime related. I hope things are going well for you as well!!! :)

I agree with literally everything in your Anime pet peeves. Especially oniichan. Like are they serious?! They're not related what so ever! I hate it when they say that.

I just wanted to let you know that I'm planning to retire from MAL activeness fairly soon, BlackMagic. The reason I'm doing this is I have certain life goals set up for myself and unfortunely being active at MAL is going to take up too much of my time. Even though I still do like anime, my passion for it is not the same as it once was.

I wanted to say that I have enjoyed our past discussions and it was an honor to help you out over the years at CnC. Hope you enjoy your times at life as much as I have. Farewell.

Similar for me, dropped out of school, spent a year working, realized I wasnt ready to work full time for the rest of my life, moved to Chicago. Living in an apartment and taking classes here. Also, Im now realizing how many shows I still need to watch... oh well, waiting till the summer for that.
Megadedhed Mar 25, 2013 7:16 PM
Dude, Its been like... forever. How have you been?
