Looks like you dropped it right before the explanation arcs start.

Episodes 14 and 15 explain more about the dam incident and introduce a character who becomes relevant in season 2. I wouldn't skip it since season 2 episode 1 is told from his point of view.

Episodes 16-21 tell the second arc from Shion's point of view and starts to reveal some of Rika's secrets (including the real reason why she was at the Sonozaki mansion when she died).

Episodes 22-26 are similar to arc one except Rena is the one who becomes paranoid about her friends and it is told from Keiichi's point of view. It doesn't sound like much, but this arc actually explains a lot if you pretend that Rena is arc 1 Keiichi. Don't skip it because season 2 episode 1 takes place immediately after this arc ends.

Almost all of season 2 is told from Rika's point of view (you'll understand why at the end of S1), every arc focuses on answering questions instead of raising new ones, and the stakes are much higher after the true villain is revealed.

Higurashi: Rei (season 3) is completely pointless and Higurash: Kira is literally just fanservice.

The final two arcs of Higurashi S1 answers some questions and the entirety of season two is devoted to puzzle solving and finding the true villain.
