I'm a professional computer nerd, working on my Master's in nerd bullshit. I got into anime late ( early 2010!), and in a peculiar manner (my first anime was Gantz). Still, I got hooked! Some of my classic favorites are the original Evangelion series and EoE, Code Geass, Outlaw Star, the Berserk series from the 90's, and Death Note. More recent favorites include Golden Kamuy, Nagatoro, and Dress Up Darling.

Since you like SAO, should watch Shingeki no Kyojin. By far way better than SAO.
