The Sword Art Online: Full Dive event announced on Sunday that a new original anime movie for the series is in production.

The first two anime seasons aired in Summer 2012 and Summer 2014. The Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale anime movie, featuring an original story by original creator Reki Kawahara, premiered in Japan in February 2017.

The Alicization arc aired the first 24 episodes in Fall 2018, followed by a split cours second season in Fall 2019 and Summer 2020.

Sword Art Online adapts Kawahara's adventure sci-fi light novel, which has been published through the Dengeki Bunko imprint since 2009, featuring illustrations by abec. Kadokawa shipped the 27th volume on October 7.

Yen Press licensed the light novel in English and released the 25th volume on September 20, with the 26th volume scheduled to ship on March 21.

They should make a new season tbh, given it's only movies since the conclusion of Alicization.

Didnt we just get a new introduction.  Im confused.  Is this going to be a new new introduction?

That aside why cant we get new story content or did the story writers run out of story so we in an endless loop of new new reimagining?
There's just not enough source material, there's only 1 more arc after Alicization and it's still pretty early into it, that's why they decided to adapt the Progressive novels in the first place, to give time for the next arc to be done in the novel.

I don really know how rights to content and stuff work, but this show pretty much introduced the concept of the seed. Any world can be born and realised. I very much enjoyed gungale online although it was technically set in a new seed with main MC already romping through it. But the original writers to this concept and unqiue story telling universe have almost gifted people a whiteboard to create on. Even if the main seed has out grown its moment, so many more interesting ideas and concepts in VR story could come out of the idea that all it takes is one seed. Although I do need more Kirito. I dont think his story is finished just yet

So basically Original content, i hope they will put more budget on it, Ordinal Scale was top class and it had better animation and music than Progressive movies, so I hope they'll make this movie such that it signifies the upcoming arc, and make it memorable.

I hope this not a "recap" they did it before.

Wait, so not a new Progressive movie? Interesting. Hopefully as good as Ordinal Scale.

They have my attention since I enjoyed Ordinal Scale and the remake films

would've preferred a sequel to Alicization but let's see how this movie will be I'm excited for this

Original movie? Some Silica screentime potentially maybe hopefully but probably not.

Sao Progressive movie is ended. No more material for movie. But it can be a series after the plot in the LN is resolved (Elf war campaign).

And for the main time line. Unital ring arc is still early to adapt. So it make sense they took the route creating original anime movie.

My prediction is. Prequel of Sao or they adapt game time line. Dunno.

Just so you know, today is when SAO was launched in the SAO universe, so it's only appropriate that an announcement was made to commemorate the day the game was launched inside the story's universe. November 6, 2022, and we still don't have anything that does what the NerveGear does.

Oh, never knew Ordinal Scale was source original, then I guess this could be too, and here I thought this would be unrelated to the canon.

So is the SAO: Progressive series of movies finished now and this will potentially kick off a new "stage" in the franchise, or is this just a side-project to hold fans over while they keep working on the former?

Wonder what this'll be about.

Ordinal Scale was great so if it's like that I'm pretty excited.

These days, another anime in the SAO franchise doesn't seem like much of a surprise anymore.

i will wait for an actual PV first since its an original and not canon its safe to skip it too anyway
