You didn't state your gender, so I'm guessing that you're not male. I'm not trying to be ignorant or anything, but please don't act like you know what it's like to be a guy.

And you shouldn't act like your personal experience makes you all knowing when it comes to relationships, even if it is just between male-to-male relationships. You cannot be the arbiter for everyone else's experience and interactions.

Not to mention, there is something called allyship. Being able to understand and empathetic without being a member of a community. If you think just because someone is or is not a member of a community, that automatically disqualifies them from participating in meaningful discussions, then you are wrong as you erase decades of LGBTQIA history.

In addition, this is literary critique we are talking about here, not your or any other men's experiences. For example, Detective Conan (I also mentioned in my thought piece) is extremely realistic and grounded, but that is not based on my own experience or my identity or gender or whatever. It is based on analyzing the content in the show. That's what I did in the thought piece, analyze the show.

I've read through that, but I don't think you understand what I was trying to say. When I said that it wasn't "realistic," I meant that Shun and Mio act like a couple of 5-year olds, even when they're in their 20s.

Adults don't act like Shun and Mio. They didn't fall in love like real people do. If you're not male, then I don't expect you to understand what it's like for a male to be in love.

People fall in love in all sorts of ways, just because you think one way is immature another isn't doesn't mean anything to the story. Adults can act in all sorts of ways too. The key is being able to critically analyze the film and see if it can have a nuanced and layered portrayal of their relationship. I don't think it was perfect by any stretch, but it was not "childish" or "unrealistic".

Okay, then, explain to me how you think that it's "realistic" and "grounded."

Here it is. It is an extremely long thought piece I completed after watching the film.

Umibe no Etranger was very childish and unrealistic, though.

Umibe is much more realistic and grounded than most of the BLs out there. It is not perfect, but it is definitely in the same ranks if not higher as Given and Doukyuusei. Personally, both shows are not as good as Umibe, but lots people don't see it this way.

++++
I dropped this series back when the TV series was airing, it didn't really have anything going for it. But if this arc is better, I can give it a try. All the non-consent critiques still apply though.

First it was 'enjoying things in a fictional setting' and now it's 'Trying to make social rules regarding enjoyment of media', which is it..?

Trying to make social rules regarding enjoyment of media is about morality.

In what way..? And who's trying to make these social rules..

marx-chan said:

Okay?

Again, the insinuation in moody's post is that finding rape abhorent = a 'western standard of morality' and that other societies don't share that..

Look, I don't know how to make it any more apparent they were talking about morality pertaining to what you like in fiction. You're taking mine and their statement way too literally and think for some reason it's about the actual act and not them enjoying problematic fiction.

No, they didn't.. If that was the case you would be talking about taste, not morality..

Trying to make social rules regarding enjoyment of media is about morality. Again, they said media in their original post. They're talking about media. Not IRL actions nor taste.

Okay?

Anyway, this is off topic. Have a nice day!

Hopefully the movie comes out at least nice looking. The anime was decent.

Seems pretty obvious that they're talking about enjoying things in a fictional setting. Liking fictional depictions of an act doesn't make you actually support that act in real life.

Okay, you still made some silly comment about how Japanese women find rape morally acceptable because Moodie went off on some tangent about morals over fiction. Point is, no, they were not implying that. Just that some of them like certain fictional tropes and they're allowed to, even if we don't.

Tangent.. With that statement moody implied that the rest of the world doesn't have that 'standard of morality', that they don't find rape morally abhorent.. That's what my comment was about.. I'm sorry, but why are you defending that level of bigotry exactly..

Is that so..? Well, I'm sorry if it was very childish and unrealistic for you. I thought Umibe no Etranger was better because they did it without coercion and
we got to see some "relatable" problems like when Shun's parents knew that Shun is gay or because of the trauma he had, Shun felt guilty when Mio likes him even though Mio is someone who likes girls.. the movie cuts many important scenes from the manga, maybe that's the reason why the movie seems childish and unrealistic.

But the sequel, Harukaze no Etranger, is better than Umibe no Etranger.. I think. Maybe you want to try to read it? :D

Doesn't umibe no etranger have a big age gap between the 2 main characters?

Yes, it's about 6 years age gap. I can't argue about this because I understand for some people big age gap is a problem.. but for me it's not a big problem. And when Shun and Mio started dating, Mio is already 20 and Shun is still in his 20s :)

No, they just know it's not real, so it has no bearing on actual morality. Also porn/media made by western women has a lot of rape/non-con in it. Guess they think rape is morally acceptable?

Yes, women in japan are allowed to enjoy things thats produced and consumed mainly for them. Take your ethnocentrism elsewhere because anime isn't going to be dictated by western standards of morality.

I for one am excited to see what Tatsuwa has in store for the movie. Its going to be his first film ever despite being in the industry for a long time.

Even if the anime cutting or censored that part its doesnt deleted that the original source(manga) is still romanticizing rape....
like wth the love interest suddenly drugging and raping the male lead on the first chapter on the manga...idc if they cutting/censored that part on the anime to make it tamer, but why tho? They should just make it fullblown porn without all the fluff and romantic part bcs thats weird af, but instead they decide to make it tamer with cutting out the rape scene(?)if they want tamer love story then why not adapting other story that doesnt contain the rapey vibe? I mean theres a LOT more better written BL story with healthy relationship that they can adapted, but why they 'always' choose this kind of yaoi trope to be adapted its just really.....*sigh*

I understand what you mean. You're so right and I think (almost) the same as you, but to be clear, in the DakaIchi anime, literally rape doesn't happen. I am not talking about censor or cuts, the dialogues are changed and the scenes are readjusted, there is no rape and their first time in consensual.

There are many super good BL stories that deserve to be adapted, but it must be understood that making anime is expensive, only very popular titles manage to have an anime, which in the end (and in general), is advertising for the manga.BL animation is still a field that is just beginning to be explored, we must understand that these titles will be the keys that will open the doors to new and more varied adaptations.

Normally I am against changing the story from the original source, but how reject a so favorable change? I decided to embrace DakaIchi anime because the animation staff did a wonderful, no, SPLENDID job improving the original story and proving that DakaIchi's story didn't need a rape... LOT OF BL´S DON'T NEED RAPES...*sigh*.
the thing is too many BL with this kind of trope is the one that get adapted into anime, I just hope they give other BL which is more good written & dont have abusive relationship a chance, so far we only get few of it which is shame.

Then, Ironically DakaIchi anime became one of the healthiest BLs out there. I hope you can give DakaIchi (anime) another chance! :D
idk what standard you have to describe "Healthiest relationship" BL story is, you can have ur opinion i respect that, but for me their relationship aint healthy.

Forcing yourself on ur partner/love interest is never healthy.
Asking for consent no matter how small it is and respecting ur partner boundaries is the healthiest relationship one for me. And this couple from this series doesnt have it.
Theres far more healthiest BLs story out there than this that still havent been adapted yet imo.

Well you can ask to best seller mangaka Harada about that topic lol (that was some kind of sarcasm) So yes, what rude-san is saying isn't entirely wrong.
